ERB AT LFSF INTERPRETATION AND USE

What is the ERB? Educational Records Bureau “Not-for-profit educational service organization providing …achievement assessments…for PreK-Grade 12 to over 2000 independent, faith-based and select public schools worldwide.” – erblearn.org CTP: Comprehensive Testing Program “A rigorous assessment for high achieving students in areas such as reading, listening, vocabulary, writing, [science] and mathematics.” – erblearn.org

The ERB test is a “Low-Stakes” Assessment Provides a “snapshot” of a week in the life of our students NOT used for decisions regarding advancement from grade to grade NOT used for grading Your child’s teachers use multiple forms of evaluation for overall assessment, including, but not limited to: In-class work Participation Homework Observations of individual and group work One-on-one instruction Projects Tests

Why do we use ERB tests? Allows us to compare our students’ performance with a variety of norm groups National Norm – Mixed demographics, 50-60 thousand scores from past 3 years Independent school Norm - 1200-1300 schools with screened admissions, select student body (No Catholic schools included ) FRAS- approximately 20 French-American Schools in the United States Helps track individual growth in skill areas over years Provides instrument for instructional planning Helps us diagnose strengths and weaknesses in specific skill areas for entire classes or individual students Helps us evaluate the efficacy of our own English instruction Closely matches our English curriculum Is used by the majority of highly ranked independent schools

What Parents Need to Know Do not worry or stress your child about the tests or scores LFSF uses ERB tests as a tool to evaluate and improve English instruction Limited English instructional time naturally affects ERB results in earlier grades Keep your child’s scores to compare their progress year-to- year, and to identify strengths and areas for growth Ask your child’s teacher if you think something seems irregular or concerning Results over the past 17+ years have shown that the LFSF English program is highly successful in the long term
