1 We will be able to: - Articulate the importance of recognizing differing perspectives and opinions of diverse peoples - Describe the political, economic and social factors that influenced and governed the Diverse Peoples of Pre- Confederation Canada - Evaluate the connections between the Diverse Peoples presented in pre-confederation Canada and the novel The Hobbit. - Appreciate the unique characteristics associated with unique cultures/groups

2 Understandings: Students will understand that: Diverse social, political and economic structures have helped build pre- confederation Canada There were diverse influences from the Aboriginal, French and British peoples on events leading to Confederation There is a need to appreciate the challenges of co-existence among peoples Economic and political competition is related to the control of the North American fur trade Plot structure creates story Historical perspective must be considered when analyzing text Essential Questions: How have the relationships of diverse peoples in pre- confederation Canada created unique cultural perspective? What story do maps, globes and images tell? How is the written word used to share and report observations?

3 We will be able to: - Articulate the importance of recognizing differing perspectives and worldviews of persons from Japan’s history and today’s society - Describe the political, economic and social factors that influenced and governed the Japanese during the Edo Period - Evaluate the connections between Japan’s social hierarchy and contemporary Canadian society - Appreciate the unique characteristics associated with unique cultures/groups

4 Understandings: Students will understand that: Cultural and personal isolation and adaptation affect individuals and societies in different ways. Political, economic and social factors all play a role in shaping the worldview of a society. The physical geography can affect the isolation and/or adaptation of a society. Hierarchies may inhibit change, restore social order and encourage forms of isolation. Worldview and Perspective are critical in understanding and appreciating cultures. Essential Questions: How do time, geographic location, cultural isolation and rapid adaptation shape an individual's citizenship, identity and society's worldview. How does rapid adaptation have an affect on traditionally isolated societies? How does literature explore concepts of “perspective” and “isolation”

5 We will be able to: - Articulate the importance of recognizing the factors that influence governance and rights issues in Canadian society and in literature - Describe the political, economic and social factors that influence governance and rights issues - Evaluate the connections between perspective and governance/rights issues - Describe and explain the legislative process in Canada’s Political System

6 Understandings: Students will understand that: Canada’s political processes impact citizenship and identity in an attempt to meet the needs of all Canadians. Citizens and organizations have roles and responsibilities within the justice system. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms fosters and impacts individual and collective rights. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms fosters and impacts collective rights. Literature may explore themes of governance and individual/collective rights symbolically, metaphorically and thematically. Canada’s legislative system has unique characteristics, rules and requirements. Essential Questions: How does the changing nature of Canada’s political processes and government policies on rights and governance impact citizenship and identity. How are Governance and Rights thematically represented in various genres of writing?
