Friday, October 31, 2014 Daily Question: Do all kinds of earth materials erode in the same way? Explain. Materials: Pencil Notebook/Folder IAES book Daily Objective: Today we will begin to write a lab report for activity 31. Agenda : Bell work/ Agenda Activity 31 Resistance to Erosion Lab Thank you for not chewing gum or anything else
2
Activity 31 Resistance to Erosion We are going to write a formal lab report for the Activity 31 lab. Include all the steps on your lab report guide. Write up all the steps through the procedure. we will perform the experiment and collect data.
3
2 nd quarter lab report: Title Purpose/problem statement: Hypothesis Variables – Independent/dependent/constant Materials Procedure Data table Graph (double bar) Scientific drawing Data Analysis Conclusion
4
Act 31– Results Use the white lab report guide and these notes to help you prepare your results section. Include: a data table graph scientific drawing data analysis
5
Data Tables and Graphs Label IVLabel DV Unit of measure IV goes here# goes here IV goes here# goes here Six things that all graphs should have: 1.Title 2.DV label in words on the vertical axis (unit of measure) 3.DV labeled in evenly numbered increments 4.IV label in words on the horizontal axis (unit of measure) 5.IV labeled in even increments 6.Data displayed correctly 7.Optional – key to graph Table 1
6
Scientific Drawing Make a drawing of your experimental setup and label all the materials used. Include a title and labels of all objects on straight lines to the right on the paper. Drawing 1 Test tube Florence flask Vinegar
7
Double Bar Graph Double Bar Graph: a graph using parallel bars of varying lengths to compare data. Amount of erosion/run off Type of Soil
8
Act 31: Resistance to Erosion Data Table Basin Observations Erosion Ranking Water Runoff Ranking A B C
9
Data Analysis The object of your data analysis paragraph is to discuss the results of your experiment and interpret what this means. Only include facts. Do not include opinions, inferences, or further hypotheses.
10
What should your data analysis look like? Topic Sentence: In this experiment, we investigated the relationship of (your variables) Body: Explain the results from all three basins Concluding Sentence: As you can see, in this experiment we investigated the relationship of (your variables) and our results show____.
11
Act 31 Resistance to Erosion Lab– Conclusion Write a summary paragraph that includes ◦ Restate your purpose ◦ Restate your hypothesis ◦ Write a 1-2 sentence summary of your procedure ◦ Write a 1-2 sentence summary of your results ◦ Answer if your data supports your hypothesis ◦ Write what you have learned about your purpose or problem ◦ Explain any errors that occurred ◦ Indicate how this experiment is related to real life
12
Pre-lab Purpose: Hypothesis: If (independent variable)…. Then(dependent variable…. Because (explain) Variables: ◦ Dependent ◦ Independent ◦ Control
13
Activity 31 Resistance to Erosion Procedure: Follow the procedure carefully as outlined in your book Analysis Questions: 1-5
