1 Student Assistance Program (SAP) 7 th Grade Center 2015-2016  Having problems keeping your grades up?  No longer feeling like hanging out with friends or family?  Not getting along well with others?  Being bullied or harassed?  Always worrying?  Experimenting or using alcohol or other drugs? Are you or a friend......SAP is available for you.  Having thoughts of hurting yourself; cutting, scratching, burning?  Dealing with the breakup of a relationship?  Being hurt physically or emotionally by someone?  Dealing with major changes in your family?  Dealing with the illness or death of someone close to you? 2 Being a young adult can be stressful at times. Sometimes the many changes and pressures you face can be overwhelming. The Student Assistance Program (SAP) is here to help! The Student Assistance Program (SAP) is here to help!

3 What is the Student Assistance Program? The program is designed to help assist school personnel in identifying issues which pose a barrier to a student’s learning and school success. The team’s mission is to confidentially support students who are having difficulty with school issues or their personal life.

4 SAP Team The SAP team consists of trained school staff, which includes a core team of administrators, counselors, teachers and a nurse. The SAP team also includes liaisons from the community. Spring-Ford’s consultants are from Creative Health. Members of the SAP team can be identified by a target sign hanging outside of their rooms.

7 Signs That A Student May Need Help from the SAP Team  Expressions of anger or aggressive behavior  Feelings of depression  Withdrawal from family/friends/school  Neglect of appearance or health  Difficulty concentrating or constant worrying  Changes in school performance and attendance  Loss of interest in extracurricular activities

8 … Other Signs That A Student May Need Help From the SAP Team  Irritable or restlessness  Hurting oneself physically  Unusual weight loss or gain  Using drugs or alcohol  Taking unnecessary risks  Dealing with relationship issues or having difficulty getting along with others (bullying/harassment)  Dealing with family changes  Dealing with loss or death

9 Services Provided By SAP Prevention Programs (students/staff/parents) Mental Health Assessments Drug and Alcohol Assessments Support Groups - Peer Issues -Family Issues -Anger Management -Self-Esteem-Grief Mentoring Program Peer Mediation with Guidance/Administration

10 Contacting SAP Contacting SAP School Personnel can refer a student Parents can refer a student by contacting a school counselor Students can refer a classmate or themselves by filling out a SAP referral form Referral forms are located in the classrooms, guidance suite, and nurse’s office.

11 Remember if you know how and where to find help, you can take an important first step to getting it. The SAP team wants to help all students achieve success!

12 SAP INVENTORY The Student Assistance Team would like you to complete this inventory. Your feedback will help the team determine your interest in a support group. Please be honest and take this inventory seriously. Only members of the SAP team will see the inventory. Please go to the top of the inventory page now and fill out your name, your team, your homeroom number and your homeroom teacher’s name. You will only circle YES if you are interested in participating in a SAP group. SAP groups meet once a cycle for 6-8 weeks. If you are not interested in participating in a group, please circle NO.

13 Peer Relationships Are you experiencing difficult times with your friends and want help making new friends? Are you experiencing pressures from friends to do certain things? Circle YES or NO

14 Living In A Changing Family Are you interested in or having trouble connecting with step parents and siblings? Are you having relationship issues with divorced parents? Are you having problems balancing your life between different homes? Circle YES or NO

15 Concerns About Someone’s Knowledge of Drugs Are you interested in gaining information about substances and their effects? Are you being affected by someone’s use of substances? Circle YES or NO

16 Dealing With The Passing Away Of A Companion Are you in need of a support group dealing with the recent loss of a relative, friend or pet? Do you want to understand what someone else is going through who has lost a companion? Circle YES or NO

17 Eating Nutritionally (this group meets 1-2 times) Would you like to discuss the difficulties of eating healthy? Are you having trouble liking your appearance? Circle YES or NO

18 Self-Esteem and Pressures Are you having difficulty feeling good about yourself? Are you feeling depressed or stressed out about your life? Circle YES or NO

19 Handling Physical and/or Verbal Abuse Are you concerned family members may be mistreating you? Are you concerned friends or classmates may be mistreating you? Circle YES or NO

20 Coping With Anger Is your temper causing problems at school or with family or friends? Are you interested in learning strategies for understanding and managing anger? Circle YES or NO

21 Guy Talk This group is for males only to help build healthy relationships. Topics will include communication and self-respect. Circle YES or NO

22 Girl Talk This group is for females only to help build healthy relationships. Topics will include communication and self-respect. Circle YES or NO

23 Your School Counselors are members of the SAP team and are always available to assist you. If you are not interested in participating in a group but would like to speak with your school counselor about any of these topics, please WRITE “GUIDANCE” in the margin of your paper. Your school counselor will send you a pass soon for a meeting. School Counselors…

24 Ending Directions When you have answered the last question, please turn your paper over on your desk and your teacher will collect it. Your Homeroom teacher will put your confidential survey in the envelope, and the sealed envelope will only be seen by SAP members.
