LEQ: How do you evaluate logarithms with a base b? Logarithms to Bases Other Than 10 Sec. 9-7
2
Logarithms with Other Bases Let b > 0 and b ≠ 1. Then n is the logarithm of m to the base b, written n = log b m, if and only if b n = m. For example: Since 2 5 = 32, we can say “5 is the logarithm of 32 with base 2” (written log 2 32 = 5)
3
Graphs of Logarithmic Functions g(x) = log b x Is the inverse of the exponential function with base b, f(x) = b x Graph: Domain: the set of positive real numbers Range: the set of all real numbers x-intercept is 1; no y-intercept The y-axis (x = 0) is an asymptote to the curve
4
Evaluating Logarithms The log base and the number base must be the same The log is the exponent For example: Evaluate log 2 16 log 2 16 = log 2 2 4 = 4 Evaluate
5
Solving Logarithmic Equations Use the definition of logarithm to rewrite the equation in exponential form Solve
