How to write it effectively for the Social Studies

By the time we are done, you will be able to write a persuasive essay, using techniques we will teach you in each paragraph. Paragraph 1- Attention-getter, Thesis statement, Road-map sentences Paragraphs 2, 3, 4—Body paragraphs, using evidence Paragraph 5—Conclusion, “R & R”, & relevance to today

YOU WILL WRITE AN OPENING PARAGRAPH FOR ANY TOPIC OF THE SUBJECT THAT INTERESTS YOU.

Opening paragraph Attention-getter- Introduce the topic. “Some people say this, others argue that…” Ask the essential question. Thesis statement—Your opinion, clearly stated 2-3 Introductory reasons, simply stated, Also known as “Road-map sentences”.

In these paragraphs you develop the ideas you listed in your Road Map sentences. Use quotes as well as your own words to support each topic sentence. YOU MUST REFER TO YOUR SOURCES IN THESE PARAGRAPHS!

In your final paragraph, you will re-state your thesis, and try to “recognize and refute” opposing arguments. (“Some might argue that…”)

You will also try to add some new support, preferably from current events.
