a non-violent revolution from 17 November to 29 December 1989 one of the most important of the 1989 revolutions its symbol – jingling of the keys (meaning that new doors for the nation are being unlocked) lead to the downfall of socialism in Czechoslovakia

MAIN EVENTS OF THE VELVET REVOLUTION 17 November – police supress a peaceful student demonstration in Prague 27 November – a two-hour general strike 10 December – President Gustav Husák appoints a non-communist government (the first one since 1948) and resigns 28 December – Václav Havel is elected as the new president of Czechoslovakia

June 1990 – the first democratic elections since 1948 legitimize the new government 31 December 1992 – non- violent dissolution of Czechoslovakia (the so- called Velvet divorce) 1 January 1993 – independent Czech Republic and Slovakia are formed
