Types of Governments

Monarch – Absolute – – King and/or queen has total control over the country. They are not limited by laws or other bodies of government -Constitutional/Limited -The king and queen are limited by the laws and must behave according to it. -Ex. United Kingdom

Dictator ******(also called Autocracy) –Person who rules with complete and absolute authority.

Democracy –Type of government in which the people of a nation either rule directly or elect officials who rule on their behalf. –Example: U.S.

2 forms of Democracy 1. Direct Democracy : all voters in a community meet in one place to make laws and decide what actions to take. –(for small communities) 2. Representative Democracy : the people elect representatives to carry on the work of government for them. (The people consent to be ruled by their elected leaders)…this is called a Republic.

Oligarchy A government controlled by a small group of people. Imperialistic South Africa (Afrikaners)

Aristocracy Government controlled by the wealth of a country The wealthy offer little or no chance for poorer people to break out of poverty and change their social status –Caste system in India

Theocracy A government controlled by the interpretation of religious law i.e The Taliban- based off of interpretation of Muslim Law

Anarchy No government or established order

Purpose of Government 1.Help people cooperate 2.Providing services (education, library, police, health laws etc.) 3.Providing laws

Writing Prompt Please answer the following questions. If you were held responsible to form a new type of government for the United States, which system would you use and why? & What purpose do laws and constitutions serve in Government?
