1 SOON-TO-BE JUNIORS! WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO TAKE TO GRADUATE IN MAY 2013?

2 Codes to understand this PowerPoint AP: Advanced Placement - a weighted credit that is equivalent to a college course AP/DC: Advanced Placement with Dual Credit - You will receive college credit through Houston Community College GT: Gifted and Talented - You must be tested in order to be placed into this class ACC: Accelerated - the level between Advanced Placement and on Level Courses. You do NOT receive weighted credit

3 ENGLISH III LEVELS IF YOU TOOK ENGLISH II Pre-AP this year, you may take English III Accelerated, English III AP, AP/GT, or AP/DC. If you are unsure, consult your current English II teacher IF YOU TOOK ENGLISH II Grade Level this year, you may take English III Accelerated. You may also consider taking English III AP, AP/DC. Talk with your current English teacher about this change

4 SOCIAL STUDIES US HISTORY Grade Level US HISTORY AP or US HISTORY AP/GT US HISTORY AP/DC Important: After the first six weeks, students CANNOT transfer between AP and Grade Level US History If you already have US History credit, see your counselor.

5 ENGLISH III ENGLISH III AP or ENGLISH III AP/GT ENGLISH III AP/DC ENGLISH III ACCELERATED

6 MATH CLASSES Minimum Plan: Algebra I Geometry Math Models or Algebra II Recommended & Distinguished Plans: Algebra I Geometry Algebra II 4 th State Approved Math * * Math Models will suffice, but must be taken before Algebra II. Most students will move from Algebra II to Pre-Calculus.

7 MATH Continued… You must have earned a 75 in Algebra I to take Algebra II You must have earned at least a 75 in Algebra II to take Pre-Calculus You must earn an 80 or higher in second semester Algebra II Pre-AP to take Pre- Calculus Pre-AP You must have completed Pre- Calculus Pre-AP to take Statistics AP

8 Math Class Transition *Geometry: You need to decide between Math Models and Algebra II Math Models: You will be in Algebra II Algebra II: You will move to Pre-Calculus Pre-Calculus: You will move to Statistics AP Find the current math course you are taking to decide what you need for next year * For these decisions you should consult with your teachers

9 Minimum Plan: Biology I IPC * Recommended & Distinguished Plans: Biology I Chemistry Physics 4 th Science SCIENCE IPC does not count as a 4 th science for the distinguished plan. You may take Chemistry in place of IPC, but if you do it is required you take Physics.

10 CHEMISTRY CLASSES Chemistry I Grade Level, ACC or Pre-AP –must have completed or be concurrently enrolled in Algebra II Chemistry II AP –must have completed Chemistry I Pre-AP

11 PHYSICS CLASSES Physics I Grade Level or Pre-AP –must have completed or be concurrently enrolled in Pre-Cal Physics II B AP –see your science teacher

12 OTHER SCIENCE CLASSES Aquatic Science –must have completed Biology I & Chemistry I Environmental Systems Grade Level Biology II AP

13 Science Transition IPC and Environmental Systems: You will move to Chemistry I *Chemistry I Accelerated: You will move to Physics, Aquatic Science. *Chemistry I Pre-AP: You will move to Physics or Chemistry II * Consult with your teachers to make these decisions

14 PHYSICAL EDUCATION You MUST have 1.0 credits of PE Dance will no longer count as a PE credit Athletics counts as a PE credit Markettes and Band will count as a PE credit first semester and Fine Arts second semester

15 FOREIGN LANGUAGE RECOMMENDED PLAN: At least two years of the same foreign language is required DISTINGUISHED PLAN: At least three years of the same foreign language is required

16 Foreign Languages The following languages are offered at Memorial: Spanish, French, German and Latin Japanese is offered through Spring Branch ISD on Saturdays at Westchester Academy

17 FINE ARTS 1.0 credit of a fine art (both semesters must be in the SAME fine art) You may choose from Art, Art History, Electronic Media, Orchestra, Band, Jazz Band, Choir, Music Theory AP, Theatre Arts, Technical Theatre and Dance

18 Note Regarding Photography You may NOT take photography as a junior Photography will count as fine arts credit but may only be taken senior year You are NOT guaranteed a spot in photography even in your senior year Have a back up course for fine arts credit in mind

19 COMMUNICATION APPLICATIONS.5 Credit Required (one semester) Choices are: Communication Applications Debate I (full year)

20 DISTINGUISHED TRANSCRIPT In addition to three (3) years of Foreign Language, 4 advanced measures are required: 4 AP exam scores of 3 or higher 4 semesters of Dual Credit earning B or higher National Merit Recognition Any combination of the above

21 Elective Courses Please review your Program of Studies New courses are being offered next year –There is an SAT prep class offered at MHS Make sure the course has MHS or Guthrie written beside it. Otherwise, it is not available to you It is EXTREMELY important to put an alternative elective. Not all courses will receive enough interest to be offered
