Main Idea: French Kings called the Capetians conquered lands held by the English in Western France and set up France’s first Parliament.

THE KINGDOM OF FRANCE In 843 Charlemagne's empire was divided into three parts.

THE KINGDOM OF FRANCE In 987 Frankish Nobles chose Hugh Capet to be their King. Hugh was the first of the Capetian Kings of France.

THE KINGDOM OF FRANCE Many French nobles had more power then the kings did in France. This all began to change when Philip II became king of France.

THE KINGDOM OF FRANCE Philip ruled from 1180 to 1223. When he took the throne, England's king ruled parts of Western France.

THE KINGDOM OF FRANCE Philip went to war against England and conquered most of the Western controlled areas of France.

THE KINGDOM OF FRANCE Philip IV, called Philip the Fair, ruled from 1285 to 1314. In 1302 he met with representatives from three estates, or classes, of French society.

THE KINGDOM OF FRANCE The first estate was the Roman Catholic Clergy, or people who had been ordained as priests.

THE KINGDOM OF FRANCE Nobles made up the second estate and townspeople and peasants were the third estate.

THE KINGDOM OF FRANCE The meeting began the Estates General, France’s first Parliament. It was the first step in France towards a representative government.
