NHSU Key Questions for today What is the NHS trying to do with the creation of the NHSU ? What is the essence of a Corporate University? What is the progress to date? How do you think it should be done?

NHSU What would you do if you had to…? transform the service into one where patients are central massively expand the workforce AND develop and skill people to work differently exploit technological advances guarantee clinical quality & meet all the NHS service targets

NHSU ‘Transformational change requires considerable innovation & learning’ Organisational structure: teamwork, networks Information systems: more than just record and control, enable and enrich ‘know-how’ HR practice: promotion of learning at the centre of managing people Organisational culture: openness, creativity, experimentation, learning from ‘failures Leadership: throughout, positive models, ‘walking the talk’

In and of the NHS - owned by it & integrated with it A provider of distributed learning programmes & systems Focused on workplace learning Delivering through a network of local learning networks throughout the country Working in partnership with other learning providers

NHSU Organisational structure A national HQ (seven Directorates) A small number of ‘schools’ (based on themes not professions) Nine Regions / Divisions in England UK wide?

NHSU Creating a local infrastructure to deliver learning. Partnership agreements with Local Learning Resource Networks (LLRN) Benefits and obligations on both parts: NHSU & LLRN Aiding local approach, infrastructure and resources to call on

NHSU Next steps Initial LLRNs agreed - June Publish Strategic and Business Plan - July / August Publish NHSU Prospectus - September Phased roll-out / launch - November

NHSU We know there are some tough issues to resolve, these include: Making time to learn Who pays for what and how much it costs Making a reality of widening participation Precisely how it will all be delivered Setting and meeting targets Achieving university title and status
