Cunningham Ch. 1 & 2 ED 592A Fall 2011

Internship and Mentoring Integrating Knowledge and Experience in real- world settings. This occurs through “purposeful engagement” in administrative roles… This is your chance to learn without the accountability of being an administrator (take advantage of it… ask many questions and reflect, reflect, reflect)

Reciprocal Sharing The interaction and discussion between “practicing” and “aspiring” principals. Meet often and ask questions. Include these interactions and meetings in your logs. You can learn from every situation (things you see handled well and things you would never do as an administrator)

Mentoring Definition: A process focused on the development and advancement of a protege by someone in a position of authority within the profession. What if this does not occur…? How will you obtain opportunities to ensure you are ready to “LEAD” a school when finished with the program?

Hoops and More Hoops If the internship is viewed as another hoop that the intern must go through, neither person will learn or gain much from the experience. Again, this is your chance to learn through successes and failures. Coming up through the system… my experiences at West Shore and LD.

Roadblocks Lack of Time… How do we fix this? Lack of Expertise from Mentor… How do we fix this? Personality Mismatch in Mentor… How do we fix this?

Chapter 2 Internship and Course Scaffolding Look for connections to your coursework when completing your log and reflections. Evaluation of School Programs Principalship Supervision and Staff Development Facilities (Budget Development) Special Education Using Assessment to Guide Instruction

Self-Directed The instructor and the mentor will “facilitate” the learning process, serve as resources, and ensure that growth has actually taken place, but they do not direct it; that is the responsibility of the intern. Interns also serve as a resource for each other. Communicate and support each other.

Activities Brainstorming – Look at Large Scope Start with things you are comfortable with and knowledgeable of, but work up to activities you are know the least about. As you move forward analyze the culture and climate of the buildings you are completing activities in.

Things to think about… Have you discussed “expectations” with your mentor? Will these expectations change over the course of the year? Do you have a long-range plan for hours? Philosophy… What are you grounded in now and do you think that will change? Remember: Getting good experience is the only remedy for inexperience.
