Nonprofit. Research Based. Mission Driven. Since 1980. SIPPS Showcase Kenly Elementary School May 23, 2011

To help children develop to their full potential - academically, ethically, socially, and emotionally. The Mission

Guiding Principles. Build on intrinsic motivation in students Build an inclusive learning community. Integrate academics with social and ethical learning. Set up the learning situation so students do the thinking. Allow content and student learning to dictate the teaching method. Provide intellectual rigor and accessibility Advance teacher practice

Four Corners Activity Listen as I read the quotes posted around the room. Choose the quote that most resonates with your reasons for coming here today. Move to that quote. Introduce yourself to others who’ve chosen the same quote. Discuss what enticed you to attend this showcase.

Four Corners Activity 1.Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything ~ George Bernard Shaw 2.Furious activity is no substitute for understanding. ~ ?? 3.If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn. ~ Ignacio Estrada 4.Who dares to teach must never cease to learn. ~ John Cotton Dana

Four Corners Activity Consider the quotes again Move to a different quote that resonates with you. 1. Discuss the challenges that your students have with decoding? 2. What impact does this have on teaching and learning?

Why SIPPS? Why Now? Systematic Instruction in Phoneme Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words SIPPS is a systematic decoding curriculum that helps struggling readers develop reading fluency FAST.

SIPPS Program Development Developed by Dr. John Shefelbine, — California State University, Sacramento Systematic Intervention Explicit Instruction  Phonemic Awareness  Phonics  Sight Words Single-syllable and polysyllabic decoding

SIPPS Developmental Continuum Grades K–3 SIPPS Beginning (30-40 min.) short vowel, single syllable decoding SIPPS Extension (20-30 min.) complex vowels, single syllable decoding SIPPS Challenge (15-20 min.) polysyllabic decoding Grades 4–12 SIPPS Plus (15-20 min.) single syllable short and complex vowels struggling readers 4th–12th grades high interest/ low level reading material SIPPS Challenge (15-20 min.) polysyllabic decoding differentiated word lists for older readers

Effective Phonics Intervention 1. Initial Assessment and Placement Identifies skill level Multiple entry points to match student needs 2. Structured and Systematic Instruction Phonics and sight words arranged in order of utility Consistent instructional strategies 3. Flexible Grouping and Pacing Progress Monitoring Opportunities for Regrouping and/or Re-teaching 4. Fluency Practice High interest, decodable text for immediate practice in each lesson (Beginning, Extension, Plus) Fluency libraries (Extension, Plus, Challenge)

SIPPS Beginning Level (p.22) Blending, segmentation Consonants, consonant digraphs, short vowels High-frequency sight words SIPPS Extension Level (p. 32) Segmentation, manipulation Blends, long/ complex vowels, final e, inflectional endings, c & y at end of words High-frequency irregular sight words SIPPS Challenge Level (p. 44) Syllabic patterns  Open/closed syllables  Consonant/vowel patterns Morphological units, including  Prefixes  Suffixes  Roots Developing Word Recognition Strategies Fluency Practice Lesson Content SIPPS Plus 4-12

Video Introduction to SIPPS Prepare to View the Video – Beginning Lesson 15 As you watch the video, use the following questions to jot down some notes for our follow-up discussion: 1.What do you notice about the benefits of SIPPS for students? 2.What do you notice about the benefits of SIPPS for teachers?

K-3: Consistent, research-based routines Beginning Level & Extension Level Phoneme Play Phonics and Decodable Words Sight Words Guided Spelling Reading a story Fluency Practice/IDR  Story Charts, Little Books - SIPPS Beginning Level  Decodable Story Books transitioning to Self-selected Tradebooks - SIPPS Extension Level

Polysyllabic Decoding: Grades 3-12 Challenge Level Single Syllable Phonics (Optional Review) Irregular Words Syllabic Transformations Morphemic Transformations Sight Syllables Reading by Syllables Reading Entire Words Guided Spelling Fluency Practice/IDR

Single Syllable Decoding: Grades 4-12 Plus Level (4-12) Phoneme Play Phonics and Decodable Words Sight Words Guided Spelling Reading a story Fluency Practice/IDR  Dreams on Wheels  Trade Books

SIPPS Implementation Key Points Begin with assessment, grouping, and placement of students, based on the Placement Assessment. Differentiated instruction is the only way to teach decoding. Groups usually average around 6 students, depending on the age and behavioral needs. Once SIPPS lessons begin, teach students daily. A lesson requires approximately 30 minutes. Teach all the components in each lesson (i.e. not just focus on sight words). Follow the teaching routines explicitly for each component.

Voices from Field

The Impact: Teaching & Learning Reflecting on all that we have discussed today… Remember the questions that brought you here…  Do your kids read with fluency?  Can they decode?  Do they know the joy of reading? Consider the possibilities for teaching and learning?

I would love to have Name ________________________ Title______________________________ District ________________________ Address____________________________ Email _______________________ Phone ____________________________ An additional sample of SIPPS® Grade ______ A sample of Guided Spelling™ Grade ______ An interactive Professional Presentation for my group Other___________________________________________ I’d like to be in the DSC community and receive info on webinars and future presentations
