AS 91059 Demonstrate understanding of basic concepts used to make products from resistant materials
2
describing characteristics of resistant materials: Radiata Pine Radiata pine is a soft wood. It is a light colour and it grows fairly quickly over 30 years or so. It is safer to work with untreated pine as you don’t need to use gloves for handling it It is safer as well as there are no chemicals in it It is safer for children’s toys as there are no chemicals Radiata pine has grain and you should sand with the grain
3
describing characteristics of resistant materials: Ply wood Ply wood is made up of thin layers of radiata pine. The grain is layered cross grain in each layer Plywood has been glued together and it’s profile shows layers This is a cheaper alternative to timber as it uses the waste This should be varnished because it has been made with glues It can splinter when you use the chisel on it for carving or making joints such as mortise and tenon. It is better to use a dowel joint as the drill is sharper and more precise. It is safer to use than treated pine and safer to use that MDF It can be used for children’s toys or furniture
4
describing characteristics of resistant materials: MDF MDF is made from compressed wood fibre, similar to cardboard but stronger. It is soft to carve with a chisel. MDF contains resins or glues that can break down over time and so it must be sealed with varnish for it to be safe for children MDF dust is dangerous to breath in and so a safety mask should be worn to protect your lungs MDF is great for carving as the grain does not interfere with the pattern
5
explaining safe techniques to be used with resistant materials Generally MDF dust is dangerous because of the resins or glues that are used to ind the MDF MDF is a smaller fibre that can get caught in the lungs Plywood could be dangerous for splinters and often splinters will fly off from a saw Plywood also has glues in between the layers Radiata pine is a fairly safe timber if it is untreated. If it is treated, it will have chemicals in it. It is treated to prevent fungus and for outdoor use
6
describing which combinations of techniques and resistant materials would be suitable for use in a situation.
7
one or more of measuring or marking out Using radiate pine Using plywood Using MDF Explain the issues or ways to measure and mark out using one or more of the materials
8
one or more of sizing, shaping, or forming Using radiate pine Using plywood Using MDF Explain the issues or ways to size, shape or form using one or more of the materials
9
one or more of joining or assembly Using radiate pine Using plywood Using MDF Explain the issues or ways to join or assemble using one or more of the materials
10
one or more of finishing, detailing, or tuning. Using radiate pine Using plywood Using MDF Explain the issues or ways to sand, paint and varnish using one or more of the materials Remember, sanding is with the grain. Varnishing is done with a mask as it is using a spray
