A Geographer’s World Essential Question: Hoes does geography help us understand our world? What we will be learning about in the next couple of weeks: 1.section 1- studying geography—what is it really? 2.section 2- geography themes and essential elements 3.section 3- the branches of geography
3
Two Main Branches of Geography Human Features vs. Physical Features reservoirs towns neighborhoods stadiums universities (anything created by man) human canyons deserts flat plains rolling hills mountains (anything created by nature) physical Together, these features make the region’s landscape.
4
How is Geography a Science? 1.they make observations about their surroundings 1.they take measurements of the surroundings 1.use satellites images
5
How is Geography a Social Science 1.it visits the places people live 1.talks to people about their way of life
6
Independent Work Create a tree map identifying geography as a science and as a social science.

9
How Geographers look at the world.
10
Independent Activity/Bell Work Describe the life of this from planting to eating. Then create a two column organizer listing it’s physical needs (features) from the Earth to the human needs (features) from people.

A Geographer’s Tools
14
The Orange Experiment!
15
Coolest Tool Ever!!! Satellite Images! There are 2 types of Satellites: 1. true color satellites 2. infrared satellites = based on HEAT https://www.google.com/maps/place/Brandon+Middle+School/@32.2818208,- 89.9979729,510m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x888281e3b6bf6097:0xae9da0854a7a2409 Why do geographers use satellite images? to see what the land looks like above Earth ALSO 1. to make accurate maps 2. show changes in regions 3. show effects of climate changes https://www.google.com/maps/place/Brandon+Middle+School/@32.2818208,- 89.9979729,510m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x888281e3b6bf6097:0xae9da0854a7a2409

Review Time Please copy each question and use your book to answer. 1. What is geography? 2. Why is geography considered a Science? 3. What is a region? Give 2 examples. 4. What global issues do geographers study? 5. How do geographers use satellite images? 6. How are maps and globes similar? How are they different?
18
Ch. 1, Section 2 Geography Themes and Essential Elements What you will learn: – the five themes of geography help us organize our studies of the world – the six essential elements of geography highlight some of the subject’s most important ideas
19
5 Themes of Geography 1.Location 2.Place 3.Human-environment interaction 4.Movement 5.Regions Independent Work – Create a graphic organizer map listing and explaining the 5 themes of Geography.
20
5 Themes of Geography location place regions movement human-environment interaction describe s where some- thing is… describe s the features that make a site unique… describe s where some- thing is… looks at how and why people move… people interacting with their environment 2 types of location: 1. absolute=specific description 2. relative=general description
21
Does anyone know how the 5 themes of geography help geographers?? ANYONE??? ORGANIZATION!! It helps geographers organize their work using the 5 themes also helps us remember to consider all important aspects
22
Which of the following does NOT belong???? location place human-environment interaction language movement regions Do YOU KNOW!?!?!?
23
We keep saying the word environment but WHAT EXACTLY IS IT? Environment includes its land, water, climate, plants and animals….
24
4.Human systems 5.environment 6.the uses of geography 1.the world in spatial terms 2.Places and religions 3.physical systems
25
It’s REVIEW TIME!!! Please copy the questions and use your book for help. 1. What is the difference between absolute and relative location? Give an example of each. 2. How does using the 5 themes help geographers? 3. Which of the 5 themes is associated with airports, highways, and migration of people from one place to another? 4. How are the standards and the 6 essential elements related? How are the 6 essential elements similar to the 5 themes of geography?
