Parents’ Meeting Wednesday 20 th April – 5.30pm

Agenda Phonics Screening Check Year 2 SAT’s tests 2

Phonics Screening Check Every Year 1 child in the country will be taking the phonics screening check in June. The aim of the check is to ensure that all children are able to read by the end of year two. This ‘midpoint check’ will ensure that we have a clear understanding of what the children need to learn in year 2. We will not report children’s scores, we will simply inform parents if their child has met the expected standard or not. There will be a follow up test in Year 2 for children who did not achieve the expected standard in Year 1. 3

During the screening The children will complete the check one at a time in a quiet area of the school. I will conduct all of the screening checks with the children. The screening will only take 5-10 minutes with each child. The check is very similar to tasks the children already complete during phonics' lessons. Children will be asked to ‘sound out’ a word and blend the sounds together. The focus of the check is to see which sounds the children know and therefore, the children will be asked to read 20 made up ‘nonsense’ words and 20 real words. The screening will take place throughout the week beginning Monday 13 th June. 4

Digraph- 2 letters making one sound cow Trigraphs- 3 letters making one sound night Split digraphs- 2 vowels with a consonant inbetween. Use to be known as the magic e! spine - i_e 6

How can parents help? Children can practise their phonics by playing games online. The children particularly like ‘Buried Treasure’ which is available free on the website ‘Phonics Play’. 8 http://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/BuriedTreasure2.html

Year 2 SAT’s All children in Year 2 and Year 6 will be taking the national curriculum tests (SAT’s) in May 2016 The tests will provide information about how your child is progressing, compared to children the same age nationally. They are not qualifications and don’t affect your child’s future options in school. The results are used to ensure that schools are teaching their pupils the essential knowledge and skills in the subjects that are the early building blocks. This is to ensure every child reaches their full potential. Your child will take these tests the week beginning Monday 16 th May 2016. They are not strictly timed tests. Most pupils will be unaware they are taking them as we will incorporate them into everyday classroom practice. 9

Year 2 SAT’s Children will complete the following tests throughout the week; English Reading – Paper 1 Short text and questions Paper 2 Longer text with separate questions English grammar, punctuation and spelling – Paper 1 Spelling Paper 2 Punctuation and grammar Mathematics – Paper 1 Arithmetic Paper 2 Mathematical reasoning 10
