IR 502 RESEARCH METHODS How to do a presentation

Changes in course structure Research paper 1 : 20% Research paper 2 : 30 % (hardcopy, due in class or earlier 27 May 2016) Mid-term : 20% Presentation 1 : 10% Presentation 2 : 20% (27 May 2016)

Planning the presentation Please use POWER POINT slides for your presentation. Make sure the power point slides work. Make arrangements beforehand if you do not have lap top that is compatible with the classroom devices. For the next presentation, you should have maximum 4 slides ONLY including the title page.  title page (your topic and your name should be on it)  Short introduction of the topic  Research questions, independent and dependent variables  Hypotheses can go on the fourth slide if they are too long

Planning the presentation Together with the slides, you could use index cards. Write down keywords or main ideas on the cards to help you remember information Practice - In most presentations, it is pretty obvious who has practiced and who hasn't. Work on what you're going to say and how you're going to say it. Do your research - In order to give an engaging presentation, you need to know what you're talking about. You don't have to become an expert, or read every book or website ever written about your topic, but you should be able to answer any questions your professor or classmates might give you.

Delivering the presentation Remember that power point is a tool for your audience, not your script. Your presentation should include much more than you put on the power point and your slides. You need to explain what you have written on the slides Make eye contact - Have the goal of looking at every person in the classroom at least once. That way, everyone will feel like you've engaged with them. This will also give out the impression that you know what you are talking about.

What to avoid DO NOT USE the word “BORING”!!!!! Please avoid this at all cost. It gives out the impression that you are NOT INTERESTED in your topic and you do not know anything about it. If you are not interested in your topic why should the Professor read your paper and why should the audience care about what you have to say. Avoid putting your paper up on the screen. Use slides instead like a normal presentation. When questions are being posed to you avoid being defensive and please DO NOT say that you can read it in my paper. Presentations are meant to test on how well you know your topic and how well you are able to articulate it.

THE NEXT PRESENTATION (27 MAY 2016) Everyone has to present on this day. Time is limited and precious. If you do not present you will not get points for presentation Here’s what I would like you to present 1.Short introduction of the topic 2.Research question 3.Hypothesis/hypotheses 4.Independent and dependent variables

Final paper (due date 27 May 2016) The final paper MUST include the followings: 1.Introduction of the topic 2.Significance of the research (why do think this research is important) 3.Objective of the research (what do you aim to get out of this research?) 4.Literature review 5.Problem statement (optional) 6.Research question/questions 7.Hypothesis/hypotheses 8.Independent and dependent variables 9.Data collection methods 10.Conclusion

Final paper (due date 27 May 2016) Papers must be turned in on 27 May 2016 in class or earlier. They must be in HARDCOPY!!!! DO NOT SEND YOUR PAPERS TO ME VIA EMAIL UNLESS WITH SPECIAL PERMISSION FROM ME! I will deduct points for late papers

Research questions, hypotheses Research questions, hypotheses and independent and dependent variables have to be in line or in tangent with one another Example of research question: Why are there different levels of ethnic conflicts in Indonesia in comparison to the Philippines? Dependent variable: Levels of ethnic conflicts Possible independent variables:  Government policies  Economic incomes of different ethnic groups  The number of ethnic groups

Levels of ethnic conflicts Government Policies Economic income Number of ethnic groups Dependent variableIndependent variables Hypotheses must come from the independent variables. FORMULATE HYPOTHESES BASED ON EACH INDEPENDENT VARIABLE. ONE INDEPENDENT VARIABLE FOR ONE HYPOTHESIS!

Examples of hypotheses Example of research question: Why is there a higher degree of ethnic conflicts in Malaysia in comparison to Indonesia? DP: Levels of ethnic conflicts Independent variables: Govt policies, eco income & no. of ethnic groups Hypotheses: 1.I hypothesize that government policies in a country that favor specific ethnic group will cause a high level of ethnic conflict 2.I hypothesize that different levels of economic income among ethnic groups in a country will cause different levels of ethnic conflict 3.I hypothesize that a high number of ethnic groups in a country will cause high levels of ethnic conflicts
