CHAPTER 4 WEEK 6 DESIGNING WITH TECHNOLOGIES USING SCRATCH AS A LEARNING AND TEACHING TOOL FOR DESIGN LBSC642, MIM, UMD Makoto Asami

OVERVIEW OF LEARNING OF DESIGN WITH TECHNOLOGIES Design can better contextualize and motivate learners to explore and learn big ideas in science, mathematics, music, and computer programming. Design seems to be emerging as a new literacy for the 21st century. 1. Creativity and Innovation 2. Communication and Collaboration 3. Research and Information Fluency 4. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making 6. Technology Operations and Concepts

QUESTION How can students be motivated to continue exploring, revising, and refining their designs— to do meaningful iterative design— when their common refrain is, “ It works, so I’m done”? Scratch could be an answer! (My opinion) ・ There are infinite choices of what to design/create, and students (even adults) can dig deeper and deeper as much as they want. ・ Sharing with the community stir up their will to make a better work.

WHAT IS SCRATCH? What is Scratch, and what can I do with it? Scratch is a programming language and online community where you can create your own interactive stories, games, and animations -- and share your creations with others around the world. In the process of designing and programming Scratch projects, young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively. Who created Scratch? Scratch is developed and maintained by the Scratch Team at the Lifelong Kindergarten group at MIT Media Lab. Lifelong Kindergarten group MIT Media Lab Who Uses Scratch? Scratch is designed especially for ages 8 to 16, but is used by people of all ages.

SECURITY & COST OF SCRATCH What information do you ask for during account registration? To protect the privacy of our community members, we limit what we collect and what we publish on the website. During the registration process, we ask for the following information: username - We ask that users avoid using their real names or other identifying information. country birth month and year gender contact email address Does the Scratch Team sell or rent information about users of Scratch to anyone? No. Is Scratch free? Yes! Scratch is available free of charge. You can use it in your school, and you can teach a course about it (even a course that costs money). You don't need to buy a license - it's free. For more information, please visit FAQ: http://scratch.mit.edu/help/faq/http://scratch.mit.edu/help/faq/

LET’S LEARN MORE ABOUT SCRATCH TED Talk by Mitchel Resnick (head of the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab): http://on.ted.com/MResnick Scratch Tutorial of Creating Aquarium http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPLKltqLANE

[EXERCISE] TRY TO LET HIM JOIN AS A SPRITE!

LET’S THINK ABOUT THE USE OF SCRATCH What are parents saying about Scratch? "My very shy but technical minded daughter has found this to be a fantastic, safe outlet for her creativity. She spends her free time creating ever more difficult animations and sharing them with the scratch community. The forums provide her with a group of like-minded individuals with which she can hold on a conversation... She now feels that computers, graphic design and animation are something she would like to pursue in the future. " My son is learning more than I can imagine from your tool. He is not a natural logical thinker but loves LEGO. Your LEGO-like building block structure has moved him forward by light-years in his logical thinking skills...He can snap things together and begin to see the logic reinforced by immediate feedback. How do you think?
