A LITTLE BIT OF STEPHEN KING… Stephen King was born in Portland, Maine in 1947 His first professional short story sale in 1967 to Startling Mystery Stories. In 1971, he began teaching high school English classes at Hampden Academy In 1973, Doubleday & Co., accepted the novel Carrie for publication He was active in student politics, serving as a member of the Student Senate. Stephen is the 2003 recipient of The National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.

He has since published over 50 books and has become one of the world's most successful writers. He has received Bram Stoker Awards, World Fantasy Awards, and British Fantasy Society Awards. Stephen King's formula for learning to write well is: "Read and write four to six hours a day. If you cannot find the time for that, you can't expect to become a good writer."
