2 What is Mconf? Open source multi-conferencing system that is web based Can be set up as a room based video conferencing system Distance education, Remote meetings, Broadcasting events Based on Big Blue Button web conferencing Began as a research project at PRAV: Projects in Audio and Video, Brazil Development funded by Brazilian NREN, RNP Promoted from TNC2012 Watched recording of the presentation delivered by Mr Valter Roesler of Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul at TNC2014 and read his poster created for the conference. 2

6 Success stories in SA Usage this year (to 30-04-2016): 957 users across 141 meetings Average meetings size: 6 participants Largest meeting: 33 participants Growing number of logins through Main clients: H3Africa and H3BioNet: 32 Bioinformatics research groups distributed throughout 15 African countries and 2 American partner institutions - Monthly seminars and weekly meetings (UCT involvement) Keystone Symposia: Molecular and Cellular biology non-profit organisation Rhodes University: Post graduate meetings between supervisors and students, Class for Creatives and Dramatic Writing students CSIR: Coastal Systems Advance Mathematical Modelling (CSAMM) workgroup, Emerging Knowledge for Local Adaptation Project (EKLA) SANBI: South African National Bioinformatics Institute – Combat TB project Adhoc project meetings
