Why? Today's challenge is set by Transport for London (TfL). TfL are working in partnership with MyKindaCrowd to deliver a schools challenge to raise awareness of career routes into their business. This is an opportunity for you to showcase your great ideas and get rewarded for them.
7
What do these have in common?
8
They wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for engineers!
9
What is an engineer?
10
What is engineering?
11
How many different types of engineering routes are there?
12
Cars and all things that move, including machinery. Mechanical

14
Everything built. You name it: road, bridges, buildings, underground, flood defenses, dams… Civil
15
Design power systems e.g. transformers, substations, lighting. Electrical
16
But there are over 30 types of engineering courses, with 100s of subcategories…
17
Problem Solving. Building for the future and building to last. Turning problems into opportunities. Crazy-big ideas! Sharing an idea with the world to make all our lives better. What do engineers say it’s all about?
18
And why is engineering cool? As a grown up you get to play with stuff and call it research! You get to think with your mind and create with your hands. Engineers help provide water, shelter, power, transport, food… basically everything!

'Engineering has always been of great interest to me, therefore having the prospect to start my career with TfL's Apprenticeship scheme was a dream come true! I was very confident TfL would give me many opportunities throughout my future. This expectation has certainly been exceeded, as I have been given numerous opportunities during my time at TfL. These include managing my own schemes, getting practical experience out on site and volunteering during the Games as a Travel Ambassador. (Source: Osman Ahmed )

Problem: customers were restricted by night transport options Solution: 24 hr tubes 2015 Case Study 24hr Tube
41
Problem: delays caused by credit-less oysters Solution: be as accessible as online banking Case Study Contactless payment
42
Problem: component breaking and causing closures/delays Solution: replace with new design saving time & money Case Study Stretcher Bar Bracket
43
Maybe you will focus on…
44
Or…
49
We want to know… Your changes may be minor or monumental, but you must be able to clearly show how you will ultimately ‘keep life in London working and growing, and make life in London better’ Which two modes of transport you have focused on? What you have changed and how? Who will be affected? How much it will cost (and/or save?
50

1. How has engineering had an impact on each area you have selected? 2. Highlight areas that affect your local area, and ones with a wider reach 3. Can you make these better? Faster? More efficient? More affordable? More eco-friendly?
52
Task 1 ctd… Decision time Choose one improvement you could implement on your local transport system, and one improvement with a wider London reach.
53
Your Ride, Your Ideas Your target… Part 1 Select two transport improvements, and why? How does engineering play its part Create designs
