1 Let’s learn about modals today students.

2 Modals are the words that express the mode or manner of the action denoted by the main verbs –whether the work can be done or not; whether the action should take place or not ; whether the action is necessary or not : whether there is hope for the completion of the work or not. Modal is never used alone but with the main verb. Only the first form of verb can be used after a modal. Modals express such ideas as ability, possibility, probability, duty, obligation or permission etc.

3 Examples- 1.You should not abuse him. 2.They must obey you. 3.She can swim. 4.You ought to respect your elders. You should go to school in time.

4 Can I have your company please? Can is a modal verb and is used like an auxiliary verb before a main verb. Example: Graham can repair his motorbike engine.

5 Can for skill & Ability We use can in statements to say that someone or something has a particular skill or ability. 1.My brother can speak a bit of German. 2.Rahul can play football really well. She can cook well.

6 Can for possibility; We use can to say something is possible: 1.We have an indoor pool, so we can swim everyday. 2.You can buy nice fruit at the market. She can type fast using Keyboard of computer.

7 Can for permission: We use can to say that something is permitted, or to give permission to someone. 1.The children can sit in the front row. It is used in interrogative sentences to ask for permission to do something: 1.Can I drive the car today?

8 Can for requests & offers We use can to ask for something. It is more polite than using I want or the imperative. 1.Can I have a cup of coffee, please? 2.Can you shut the window please? It can be used to offer something to someone: 1.Can I get you a coffee? 2.Can I carry that for you? Can I present my views, please?

9 Now ask the teacher for permission to do the following things: 1.(have a new notebook) Can I have a new notebook please? 2. (get a glass of water) 3. (move to another table) 4. (leave the lesson early)

10 Give permission to people to do the following things: (come in now) You can come in now. 1.(finish the work later) 2.(talk to each other) 3.(find the word in the dictionary) 4.(all change groups) 5.(go to your next lesson)
