3. As temperatures drop and snow covers the wilderness in and around Banff National Park, the elk populations in the region head to forested lowlands and valleys. The woods not only offer some protection from the elements as the elk gather in larger herds for warmth and protection, the trees provide a valuable food source. The elk eat tree bark during the winter season. It’s one of the only food sources available to them as most of the grasses they feast on during warmer months aren’t available. But when the spring thaw comes, the elk tend to follow the snow line as it recedes back up into the hills. How do different species survive during winter months?
