Cells and Cell Processes
Lesson 1- Life Processes No equipment necessarily required Plants and animals may be useful for students to look at, for discussing life processes.

Life Processes Fly A Fly B
Gr C: Explain the 7 life processes of all living things. Gr B: Analyse the need for each life process. Gr A: Justify whether an object is alive or not. Starter Key Words Organism Move Reproduce Sense Grow Respiration Excretion Nutrition Fly A Fly B Quick question: How can you tell whether something is alive or dead? Talk to your partner and as a team come up with a 3 sentence answer.
3
Fly A Fly B KEY WORD ALERT!
Starter KEY WORD ALERT! Organism- an organisms is any type of living thing. Plants, animals, bacteria,, fungi are all classed as organisms. Fly A Fly B Quick question: How can you tell whether something is alive or dead? Talk to your partner and as a team come up with a 3 sentence answer. Key information! For something to be classed as “alive” or “living” it must do all 7 life processes. But what are they?
4
What are the life processes?
Life processes are functions that all living things do. Bacteria, plants, animals, fungi all living organisms do these functions. M___ G___ ove row R________ espiration R________ eproduce E_____ xcrete S_____ ense Act out the 7 life processes using props and different body actions. Hopefully this will help cements students knowledge as they will remember each of the actions and link them to the processes. N______ utrition
5
M___ ove All living things move. Animals move around to find shelter, hunt food and to find water. Plants will move with the sun so that they are always facing towards it.
6
R________ eproduce All living things have to produce babies. If they do not then they will eventually die and their species will become extinct. KEY WORD ALERT! Species- A group of organisms which can all breed with each other and produce fertile offsprings. KEY WORD ALERT! Offspring- Offspring is the scientific word for babies of any living thing
7
What senses do you think animals and plants have?
All living things have sense which detect what is going on around them. See how many senses you can write down for plants and animals. What senses do you think animals and plants have? Animal sense Plant sense Temperature Taste Temperature Touch Light Water levels Smell Sound pH of soil
8
G___ row Growth and development is the process where living things change in size and shape.
9
R________ espiration Respiration is a type of chemical reaction which happens inside the cells of all living things.(This will be covered in more detail later in the topic) Respiration is a type of chemical reaction which happens inside of cells. It is used to release the chemical energy stored in glucose.
10
E_____ xcrete Excretion is the removal of toxic materials and waste products from the organism’s body. Animals excrete- Carbon dioxide Urine Water Salts Plants excrete Oxygen Water Salt
11
Food, water and oxygen are examples of nutrients humans require.
utrition All living things require nutrition to grow, repair themselves and reproduce. Food, water and oxygen are examples of nutrients humans require.
12
Look, Cover, Write, Check! Activity
You have exactly 1 minute to memories the 7 living processes. Afterwards, books will be put away and random students will be questioned!!!

Exam Question Reproduce- Excrete- Nutrients Excrete Reproduce-
All living organism perform the 7 living process. MRSGREN. Why it is important for a living organisms to- Reproduce- Excrete- Nutrients- Reproduce- All organisms will eventually die, it may take one year it may take 100 years. To keep their species alive they to have to reproduce and produce an offspring. Nutrients Organisms require nutrients to grow and develop. With out nutrients the organism wont be supplied with the vital energy for survival. Excrete Toxic and poisonous materials are produce within the bodies of organisms. If not removed they will kill the organism. So to prevent this the organism has to excrete the material. Gr C: Explain the 7 life processes of all living things. Gr B: Analyse the need for each life process. Gr A: Justify whether an object is alive or not. (3 marks)

Can the class complete the table?
