1 SUCCESSFUL LANGUAGE LEARNERS INVENTORY (SELL-IN) Prepared by: Lydia Wong Su Mei (GP03777)

2 INTRODUCTION  This research is to do an inventory on the strategies used by successful language learners.  Statement of Problem – find out strategies used by 10 students who have successfully achieved A for English in their PT3 (2014) result.  Research Question – Find out students way to improve their reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar and vocabulary skills.  Methodology – questionnaires to 10 successful language learners. 5 items for each skills.

3 DATA & FINDINGS Strategy 1: Listening Strategy What do I do to increase my exposure to the target language: Students prefer to listen to music, watch TV, watch movies as ways to improve their listening skills “What we learn in pleasure, we never forget” (Alfred Miercier)

4 STRATEGY 2: READING STRATEGY What do I do to improve my reading ability: Students prefer to do more light reading, read fun and pleasurable activities.

5 STRATEGY 3: SPEAKING STRATEGIES What do I do to practice speaking: Successful language learners tend to imitate the firs at language speaker, seek opportunities to learn the language, ask question in the target language. These are a few common habits of a good language learner.

6 STRATEGY 4: WRITING SKILLS What I do to write better: GLL tend to rewrite their writing, plan what they write, use a dictionary to assist their writing.

7 STRATEGY 5: VOCABULARY STRATEGIES What do I do to memorize new words: GLL tend to remember new vocabulary by writing it down, looking for meaning, remember new words they learnt.

8 STRATEGY 6 : GRAMMAR SKILLS What I do to ensure I use the correct Grammar: SLL tend to check their grammar structure by planning their sentences, ask and imitate others’ sentence structure, use grammar checker or even ask others to help correct their grammar errors.

9 IMPLICATION OF FINDINGS. 1. Good language learners learn the language of the skills through activities that they have interest in. 2. Learners tend to do watch TV or movie in English to master the language better, read for pleasure, seek opportunity to use the language, rewrite their writings for better results. 3. To learn new words, respondents are reported to write down new words, plan their sentences to master the grammar and vocabulary skills of the language.
