3 Use roots and patterns. Just like hair color, there is a pattern for talking about someone’s eyes.

4 Eye vocabulary Skîsheki- eye (singular) Skîshekôni- eyes (plural) -nîkw- root used to talk about eyes.

7 Fox Lexicon exercise Look up the word for ‘big, much’ Using the pattern that Sauk words follow, how would you say “The woman has big eyes?” How would you say “I have big eyes?”

8 Fox Lexicon exercise Look up the word ‘eye’ in the lexicon. There will be a list of various words that have to do with a person’s eyes. Write down in your notes all of the eye words that have “nîkwê” in them. Remember, that they will look like this in the dictionary ‘ni.kwe.’ Write the word in the dot form, then turn that writing into the Sauk writing and write the definition beside it.

9 Remembering Roots Is important. If you can remember roots and what they are used for, it will make it a lot easier on your brain. Don’t try to remember full words, it takes that much more space. -tep- hair -nîkw- eyes
