Muscles of Arm, Forearm & Hand
Muscles of Arm & Forearm dissection Anatomy Models Dr. Bobrd on Youtube
3
O: supraglenoid tubercle I: radial tuberosity
Muscles of the elbow Biceps brachii Short head O: coracoid process Long head: O: supraglenoid tubercle I: radial tuberosity What 2 joints does it cross? flex or extend the arm & forearm? Also supinates forearm
4
Muscles of the elbow Brachialis (Deep to biceps brachii) O: lower ½ of shaft of humerus I: coronoid process of ulna A:
5
Muscles of the arm Triceps brachii Long head O: infraglenoid tubercle Medial Head O: humerus shaft Lateral Head O: posterior humerus I: olecranon process of ulna Flex/ Extend ?? arm & forearm Will triceps help pronate arm?
7
Muscles of the elbow Brachioradialis O: lateral epicondyle of humerus
I: styloid process of radius (on models, you can see this one from both sides) A: flexes arm in mid-prone position
8
Muscles of the forearm: Anterior, Superficial
All O: medial epicondyle Pronator teres (1) I: radius Pronates hand & arm, flexes forearm Flexor carpi radialis (2) I: metacarpal Flex & abduct hand Palmaris longus (3) (absent in approx. 14% of people!) I: palmar aponeurosis Flex hand Flexor carpi ulnaris (4) Flex & adduct hand Muscles of the forearm: Anterior, Superficial 4 3 2 1
9
Muscles of the forearm: Anterior Intermeidate
Can you see your forearm tendons? Flexor digitorum superficialis O: medial epicondyle I: middle phalanx 2-5 Flexes middle phalanx of fingers 2-5
10
Muscles of the forearm: Anterior Deep
Flexor digitorum Profundus I: distal phalynx 2-5 Flexes distal phalynx of fingers 2-5 Flexor pollicis longus I: distal phalynx Flex thumb Pronator quadratus Pronates hand & forearm
11
Flexor digitorum profundus
Tendons go all the way to distal phalanges Tendons stop at middle phalanges Flexor digitorum profundus Flexor digitorum superficialis
12
Pronates hand & forearm
Pronator quadratus (deep muscle) O: ulna I: radius Pronates hand & forearm
13
Muscles of the forearm: Posterior Superficial Extensors & Supinators
All O: lateral epicondyle of humerus Extensor carpi radialis longus (2) I: metacarpals Externsor carpi radialis brevis (3) Both extend & abduct hand Extensor digitorum I: phalanges 2-5 Extend middle & distal phalanges 2-5 4 (4) 3 2 1 Muscle #1 is brachioradialis
14
Muscles of the forearm: Posterior
Superficial Extensor digiti minimi (5) Extends little finger Extensor carpi ulnaris (6) Extends & adduct hand Anconeus (7) Extends forearm 5 6 4 Flexor carpi ulnaris 7

Bony landmarks : lateral epicondyle (LE), olecranon process (OP), and the ulna itself, whose crest and head show at the distal and of the arm. The extensor muscles will follow: Anconeus (Anc), extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU), extensor digitorum (ED), extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB), exten. carpi radialis longus (ECRL), and brachiradialis (Brr). Some thumb muscles can also be seen: Abductor pollucis longus (APL), extensor pollucis brevis (EPB) and the tendon of extensor pollucis longus (EPL.) Finally, a few upper arm muscles are shown: Biceps brachii (BB), brachialis (Br), the lateral head of the triceps (Tlat) and the triceps tendon (TT).
17
Muscles of the forearm: Posterior
Deep Supinator (1) O: lateral epicondyle I:radius Supinates hand Abductor pollicis longus (2) Abduct thumb Extensor pollicis brevis (3) Extensor pollicis longus (4) Both extend thumb Extensor indicis (5) Extends index finger (point) 5 3 4 Anatomical snuff box 2 1 Anconeus
18
Posterior forearm: deep
Supinator O: humerus, ulna I: radius Abductor pollicis longus Extensor pollicis longus & brevis Extensor indicis
19
Retinaculum The flexor retinaculum is a strong, fibrous band.
Convert the deep groove on the front of the carpal bones into a tunnel, the carpal tunnel, Flexor tendons of the digits & median nerve pass through. The extensor retinaculum, holds the tendons of the extensor muscles in place. It is located on the back of the forearm & continuous with the ligament, which is located on the anterior side of the forearm.
20
Intrinsic muscles of the Hand
Thenar eminence: Group of 3 muscles O: carpals & metacarpals I: 1st metacarpal & phalanges Flex, abduct, oppose thumb Hypothenar eminence: group of 3 muscles Flex, abduct, oppose little finger
