S4 Revision: Human Geography: Development and Population
2
Title: Human Geography revision 22/06/2016 Aims: To look at the different content that could come up in the S4 exam. To revise a number of past paper style questions.
3
Starter: Mind map Write the words “Population and Development” in a circle in the middle of your page. Create a mind map with all of the things that you can remember studying during the development and population unit.
4
Population and Development Development indicators Factors that affect birth and death rate Census Population distribution (and reasons for the distribution) Population structures (population pyramids) The Demographic transition model (DTM)
5
Task: Development indicators Write down as many development indicators as you can – 3 minutes (on your own). Now speak with the people around you and add more to your list – 2 minutes. Feedback.
6
Why is one indicator never enough? Indicators are averages and therefore miss out the extremes. A country such as China has many millionaires but also many people living below the poverty line. Their GDP may be higher because of the many rich people. Indicators are too vague – they only show one aspect of a country. Indicators may not be relevant – for example number of computers per household in a country where there is little electricity.
7
Population distribution
8
This map shows population distribution over the world. What are the Physical and Human factors that lead to differences in population distribution? Discuss with the people next to you and make a list for both physical and human factors. 7 minutes.
9
Population structures/pyramids On the next slide you will see two population structures. You must answer the following 3 questions: 1. Which of the structures is a developed county and which is a developing country? 2. What problems will each of the countries face in the future because of their population structure? 3. What are some of the solutions to these problems?
