History 1155 The country becomes a part of the Swedish kingdom 1809 Sweden turns Finland over to Russia and Finland becomes an autonomous Grand Duchy in the Russian Empire 1907 Finnish women obtain the right to vote and become members of the Parliament 1917 Finland declares its independence 1919 The constitution is signed and Finland becomes a republic 1955 Finland becomes a member of the UN 1995 Finland becomes a member of the European Union 2002 Finland changes its currency to Euro

Responsible agencies Equality Unit The Ombudsman for Equality Equality Board The Council for Gender Equality Parliament The EU Ombudsman The European Court of Justice The Ombudsman for Minorities Occupational safety and health authorities supervise compliance with equality legislation in the working place. Employers and institutions of higher education are obliged under the Equality Act to draw up equality plans for promoting gender equality. Many non-governmental organizations are also involved in equality work.
