CIS-CODIF uncalibrated datasets The following CODIF uncalibrated (by nature) products have been recently delivered: –CIS-CODIF_[HS/LS]_64MQ: 64 m/q ion species x 8 energies x 4 x 3 solid angles (360°x 180°) –CIS-CODIF_[HS/LS]_RATES: Monitor rates, 16 azimuths x 16 energies x 18 counters –CIS-CODIF_[HS/LS]_TOF_EVENTS: Gives for selected events (detected ions) : Energy sweep number (azimuth) Energy step Start signal (anode number), time of flight, proton suppression flag… Synchronous with monitor rates collection These products are for expert users only, and convey information on instrument performance (used for instrument calibration, controlling mass separation…) All these datasets have been delivered until end of 2007

Ground calculated moments Ground calculated CEF files, generated in batch-mode at CESR with the CIS-3D- MOM software, using CIS-3D CEF files as input. Include density, bulk velocity (GSE frame), pressure tensor, temperatures (parallel and perpendicular to B and total temperature) –CIS-CODIF_HS ground moments: H+, He+ and O+ moments up to the end of 2005 have been delivered to CAA He++ moments are not supplied, because data are contaminated in the instrument by the tail of H+ time-of-flight distribution, resulting in strongly overestimated He++ densities –CIS_CODIF_LS ground moments: This mode is only selected for SC4 H+, He+ and O+ moments have been delivered to CAA up to the end of 2005 –CIS_HIA ground moments are not supplied: Same calibrations used as for onboard calculated moments, but with degraded time, energy and angular resolution (no added value). If necessary, users can calculate them interactively, with the CIS-3D-MOM software All these datasets have been delivered until end of 2005 Delivery of 2006/2007 data expected for March

Software & documentation Documentation –Current ICD version is V2.1 –Version V2.2 will be delivered soon : Added description of CIS uncalibrated datasets Added description of the new CIS PAD products CIS-3D-MOM software –Allows computation of ground moments, using as input each of the CIS 3D datasets in CS (corrected for efficiency counts rates) –Possible interactive selection of energy ranges, azimuths or polar elevations –Produce moments : density, velocity (ISR2 frame), temperatures, pressure tensor, in CEF format. –Also used in batch-mode at CESR to produce the CIS ground calculated moments delivered to CAA Software available for download at CAA

2. New products Pitch angle distributions datasets : –16 angular bins from 0 to 180° x 31 energy ranges –Computed for each possible CIS-CODIF or CIS-HIA 3D datasets, using FGM data –A first set of CEF files was generated for 2001 and 2002, for CIS-CODIF_HS_H1_PF and CIS-HIA_HS_MAG_IONS_PF, using FGM CSDS Prime parameters (CDF files, 4s resolution) –We were iterating last week with CAA team to select the best FGM resolution : CSDS Prime parameters CDF files (4 s) CAA FGM_SPIN dataset (4 s) CAA FGM_5VPS dataset (0.2 s) CAA FGM_FULL dataset (0.04 s) –CIS 3D data in most modes are summed over over 2 or 3 spins. –For 1 spin resolution ion 3D distributions, we note that the corresponding ion gyroperiod is of the order of a few seconds (1 spin resolution B-field data are the most suitable entry). Sample pitch angle distribution files already delivered to CAA Massive delivery of 2001 to 2005 data could start in November

Software development CL CEF plug-in: –Emmanuel Penou is actually working on a plug-in, written in C language, which allows to handle efficiently CEF files with the cl software.(Multi-mission graphical vizualisation tool). –User will have to configure CEF products description, giving path and filenames including jokers (?,*) for spacecraft, date, version, and software will be able to find, read and plot the corresponding files –The previous plot have been generated using a preliminary version of this plug-in, reading CIS 3D, CIS PAD and FGM CEF files. Possible delivery in the beginning of 2009 C and IDL CEF_read library: –I wrote a C library to read efficiently CEF files, used to compute PAD and ground moments. –This library is now record per record oriented, but can be modified to load a whole CEF file in memory. –If other teams are interested, it could be possible to add a software interface to read CEF files directly from IDL, creating IDL variables to access both data and metadata The two libraries are written in C, specially optimized to improve data access, allowing reading plain CEF files or compressed (gzip). For example, 6 seconds are necessary to read a FGM_FULL CEF file (~ 2 millions records, 200 MB (.cef) ou 40 MB (.cef.gz)) on our Dell PE2950 computer (2 x Xeon 2.0 Ghz)

Problems A bug was discovered recently, affecting the CIS-HIA_LS_SW_PSD dataset. A wrong use of energy tables used to compute Phase Space Density generates wrong values (Inf or Nan values) This bug has been corrected, but data has to be reprocessed and delivered to CAA We will reprocess this dataset as soon as possible, and deliver corrected data before end of November.
