2 Helping the World to Communicate Geographically Copyright © 2008, Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc., All Rights Reserved. Thought for this session "The greatest challenge to any thinker is stating the problem in a way that will allow a solution." -- Bertrand Russell

3 Helping the World to Communicate Geographically Copyright © 2008, Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc., All Rights Reserved. Who am I? Created my first computer map in 1969 I wear multiple hats in the OGC –CTO, Executive Director Specification Program (where all the standards work is done), Technical Committee Chair, Planning Committee Chair PhD from SUNY Buffalo, Geography, 1980 –PhD work on systems architectures for GIS. Previously worked for US Fish and Wildlife, Autometric, Genasys, Intergraph and now the OGC

OGC’s Approach for Advancing Interoperability Interoperability Program (IP ) - a global, innovative, hands-on prototyping and testing program designed to accelerate interface development and validation, and bring interoperability to the market Specification Development Program –Consensus processes similar to other Industry consortia (World Wide Web Consortium, OMA, OMG, etc.). Outreach and Community Adoption Program – education and training, encourage take up of OGC specifications, business development, communications programs Rapid Interface Development Standards Setting Market Adoption

8 Helping the World to Communicate Geographically Value of Standards Enhances ROI and reduces risk NASA Study: As compared to a 100% proprietary solution, a standards based enterprise application has a risk-adjusted Return on Investment (ROI) of 163.0% over a 10 year period. Enables interoperable workflows and integration Increases market and revenue opportunity Protects legacy investments Future proofs existing applications Copyright © 2008, Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc., All Rights Reserved.

17 Helping the World to Communicate Geographically Some OGC Standards Web Map Service Interface (WMS) –uniform access interface for Web clients to ask for and receive map “pictures” rendered by map servers on the Internet Web Feature Service Interface (WFS) –uniform access interface for Web clients to ask for, receive, and/or update actual vector data from servers on the Internet Web Coverage Service Interface (WCS) –uniform access interface for Web clients to ask for and receive coverage (raster/imagery) data from servers on the Internet Catalogue Interface Standard –Register resources (metadata, services, etc) and enable uniform discovery of distributed geospatial resources for used by applications Copyright © 2008, Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc., All Rights Reserved.

18 Helping the World to Communicate Geographically Copyright (c) 2007, Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. 18 OpenGIS® Geography Markup Language (GML) The Geography Markup Language (GML) XML-based language for encoding geographic information in order to be stored and transported over the InternetXMLInternet GML serves as a modeling language for geographic systems as well as an open interchange format for geographic transactions on the Internet. GML defines both the geometry and properties of objects that comprise geographic information.
