1 Olweus Bullying Prevention Program Back To School Night August, 2015

2 What is the Olweus Bully Prevention Program? A proactive, research-based school-wide “systems- change” program Has been used successfully in schools all over the country and around the world with positive results It is about changing the whole school climate to make it a safer, more positive place to learn. (One change that many schools have noticed after using this program for a year or two is that students actually like school better.)

3 Olweus Definition of Bullying – Definition of bullying—“Bullying is when someone repeatedly and on purpose says or does mean or hurtful things to another person who has a hard time defending himself or herself.” – Therefore, bullying involves these three components: Intentional Repeated behavior Power imbalance

4 4 School Rules 1.We will not bully others. 2.We will try to help students who are bullied. 3.We will try to include students who are left out. 4.If we know that somebody is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home.

5 It is important to note that bullying often is not physical in nature. The Olweus Bully Prevention Program addresses all types of bullying at length. Verbal Exclusion Rumors Threat Physical Ways of students being bullied, for students who reported being bullied “2-3 times a month” or more. Survey administered to 3 rd, 4 th and 5 th graders in March, 2014.

6 As a result of these “Hot Spots” for bullying being identified, steps are being taken to provide additional/more effective supervision in these areas. 1.Lunchroom 2.On the playground, during recess or breaks 3.School bus-Peaceful Bus Program 4.In class, teacher occupied 5.Hallways/stairwells Where the bullying occurred, for students who reported being bullies “once or twice” or more. Survey administered to 3 rd, 4 th and 5 th graders in March, 2014.

7 As a parent, you can take an active role in reducing bullying at our school! Ask your child about class meetings Seek more information about the Olweus Bullying Prevention program – Online at dasd.org, under Lionville Elementary Encourage your child to talk to you if s/he thinks s/he is being bullied at school. Contact your child’s teacher if you suspect bullying. Remind your child about the 4 Rules of Bullying Prevention.
