2 Monterey Area Common Sense – Safety Tips Yes, you can get sunburned on a foggy day! Dress in layers and always have a warm jacket and water with you Water temperature is very cold compared to many beaches Waves can be VERY DANGEROUS at the beach- riptides! ROGUE WAVES – HUGE unexpected waves with a strong undertow – have caused deaths – Stinging nettlefish can be found in some waters Seagulls and other wildlife can be aggressive Raccoons are not always “cute” – they carry diseases and can be very hostile Poison Oak is very common in forests and hiking/biking areas

3 ERGONOMICS 3 Seek assistance before fatigue & discomfort become painful. What is the right way to lift something? Do it Fast or Do it Right?

4 ORM Risk Management Assess the Situation Identify Hazards Communicate Hazards Understand Controls and a Safe Way to Complete Actions Get Help from Trained Personnel Consider Other Activities Going on in your Area Watch for Safe Operations throughout your Activity

5 HAZARD CONTROLS 5 Electrical Power, Potential Energy Lockout procedures must be in place for all equipment and processes. Restoration from Lockout is a controlled operation. Fall Protection- Roofs, Heights Safety Spotter!, Written Plan

6 CONFINED SPACE ENTRY PROGRAM 6 Enclosures with limited means of entry/exit that are not designed for continuous occupancy. 1.Examples: Tunnels, Storage tanks, pits, sewers, underground utility vaults, and manholes. 2.Report unlabeled spaces. 3. ENTRY IS PROHIBITED!!

7 HAZARD COMMUNICATION 7 Standard = 29 CFR 1910.1200. Right to Know Hazards in the workplace.

8 HAZARD COMMUNICATION 8 Training Requirements: -Chemical or Equipment Specific -Safety Data Sheets review -HazMat and Safety Program Overview -Proper Labeling & Storage -Access Controls, Log Books -PPE – Personal Protective Equipment -SOP- Standard Operational Procedures -Watch for Radiation, Laser, RF, and Chemical Caution Signs

9 Environmental Impacts Plan to use the least toxic materials Many things cannot go in the trash – please ask! Use only what you need in materials and energy Water conservation is important in Monterey Be aware of endangered or sensitive plants and animals during outside activities, especially in undeveloped areas.

12 Emergency Response 12 1.Review emergency procedure with your Mentor 2.Determine Muster (meeting) place, with your Mentor 3.Be aware of “Shelter in Place” as a Response When you are secure: Text Tayba at 831-XXX-XXX Hint- Add “NPS” “CALL” “STEM” etc to name on phone entry, for quick recall “I am Safe - I am at _______ Name __________” Call (9) 911 emergency services in case of serious or life-threatening injuries!

13 BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS 13 1.All blood and bodily fluids shall be considered to be potentially infected with viruses and bacteria. 2.Utilize PPE during the provision of First Aid service. 3. 14 MISHAP REPORTING 14 All Mishaps shall be reported All Interns have the responsibility to notify their supervisor when a mishap or injury has occurred in the workplace. Reporting mishaps helps raise awareness, get corrections made to the hazard, and identify trends or bigger problems. Slips trips and Falls Distracted Walking Lab Incidents
