3 Introduction The acronym, CARS is a useful framework for identifying and understanding the type of environment necessary for people to build quality products. A healthy workplace is focused on creating awareness and providing resources to support the emotional and psychological safety of all members—allowing all members the freedom to concentrate on work performance. 3

6 Communication  A wareness of communication fundamentals.  B ehaviors for effective communication skills.  C onnecting appropriately with different communication styles. 6

7 7  Exchange ideas and information.  Speak and listen with respect and purpose.  Speak clearly and confirm receptivity and understanding.  Express concerns or sensitive topics without depreciating others.  Engage in unfiltered conversation to overcome conflict and build trust.  Recognize the meaning and impact of non-verbal and para-verbal messages. 8 8  Acknowledge people.  Appreciate the unique perspective of others.  Appreciate strengths and knowledge of others.  Fight the tendency to make assumptions.  Extend care kindness, understanding to others.  Look for the value that each person brings. Appreciation

9 Appreciation Being considerate and saying please and thank you for even the smallest things. Manners go a long way and make people feel appreciated. 9

10 Respect Respect is mutual care and regard, dignity, and physical and emotional safety; a state in which everyone counts, and everyone counts upon everyone else. 10

11 Respect  Treat people with politeness, courtesy, kindness.  Listen to what others have to say before responding.  Don't interrupt or talk over people.  Keep confidences/don’t spread gossip or rumors 11

13 Sensitivity Sensitivity is showing politeness and consideration in attitude and behavior toward others. Sensitivity or a lack thereof, directly impacts productivity, healthy work relationships and job satisfaction. Nothing is better for a team than seeing everyone engage in considerate behavior. 13

14 Sensitivity Have your opinion, but give people the space to express their opinion. Sometimes we may not agree but everyone is entitled to express how they feel about some thing. You can disagree but do so in a calm manner. Avoid profanity, shouting, cursing, abusive tones. Offer a listening ear. You may not have time to hear it, but it is important the person can confide in you and lean on you for support. 14
