What is the NCAA? NCAA – National Collegiate Athletic Association Governing body for collegiate athletics Three examples of NCAA responsibilities: – Crowns champions – Hands out punishment – Oversees member institutions

How is the NCAA structured? NCAA divided into divisions. Divisions commonly based on size and the school’s philosophy of athletics. The divisions are: – Division I – UVA, Virginia Tech, and Maryland – Division II – Shepherd, Concord (WV), and Valdosta St. (GA) – Division III – Bridgewater, Randolph Macon, and Catholic (DC) Which division cannot give athletic scholarships? – Division III (Can athletes receive any type of money?)

How is the NCAA structured? All NCAA divisions have national champions and conference champions in all sports. Conference – a collection of sports teams, playing competitively against each other at the collegiate level. Examples?: – ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) – Big 12 – CAC (Capital Athletic Conference) – CAA (Colonial Athletic Association) – SEC (South Eastern Conference)

How is NCAA football structured? NCAA football divisions are slightly different than all other collegiate athletics. Divisions are: – Division I – A (Football Bowl Subdivision) – Division I – AA (Football Championship Subdivision) – Division II – Division III **Note – this only applies to FOOTBALL** http://www.ncaa.org/
