Break Out 2: Objectives: (A) Come to consensus on Ocean and Coastal activities or projects (current or new) that will best advance the identified priority objectives. Cross walk to The Secretary’s Priorities for Climate Change, Renewable Energy, Treasured Landscapes- Great Outdoors America, and Youth. (B) Provide ideas about how to identify key people at management and implementation levels to ensure this work is well underway, if not completed in 18 months.
2
Specifying Actions and Projects Question: What current activities and/or projects can be leveraged, enhanced or better coordinated for the following National Ocean Priorities? Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning Resiliency and Adaptation to Climate Change and Ocean Acidification Regional Ecosystem Protection and Restoration
3
Break Out 2 Report: Goldberg/Robertson Current activities which should be leveraged, enhanced, etc are: Priority: C & MSP Each DOI Bureau must assign/designate a field representative to participate in and contribute to regional marine spatial planning efforts Identify and validate resource information (to include variety of data such as biological, geologic, socioeconomic, cultural, etc.) Integrate terrestrial and aquatic datasets (this is our niche), particular focus on the deep offshore To include the Great Lakes, we need a new system/approach Make data available to meet Secretary’s four objectives
4
Break Out 2 Report… Continued Priority: Climate Change and Ocean Acidification Establish a template/process for climate change vulnerability assessment, adaptation, and mitigation (including steps to prioritize projects) for species, habitats, and people Implement coastal adaptation demonstration projects to reduce carbon footprint Example: renewable energy projects and looking for efficiencies in DOI facilities Recognize LCCs linkages to ocean areas Consider the development of new ocean LCCs Investigate opportunities to collaborate with related efforts such as those of NOAA, CESUs, etc. Priority: Regional Ecosystem Protection and Restoration Identify gaps in DOI and partner representation for regional ocean governance Recognize Indian trust responsibilities in ocean policy development and implementation.
5
Specifying Actions and Projects For the projects your group has identified, crosswalk them with Secretary Salazar’s priorities: Creating a New Energy Frontier Tackling Climate Change impacts Protecting Teasured landscapes – Great Outdoors America Creating 21 st Century Youth Conservation Corps
6
Break Out 2: Discussion The following top activities/projects crosswalk to Secretary Salazar’s priorities: DOI Multi-Bureau ActivitySecretary Priorities
7
Break Out 2 Discussion Ideas on how to identify key people who will make sure implementation is accomplished in a timely efficient manner are: 1 2 3 More?
