Sugar Act CAUSE To help lower taxes, in hope of slowing/stopping smuggling within the colonies. EFFECT Merchants and Traders made charges that the British government were taking away there rights.

Stamp Act CAUSE Used as a tool to help pay back the British government to help pay for the French & Indian War, and other wars in Europe. EFFECT Colonists harassed tax collectors and protested against the act.

Townshend Acts CAUSE Used to tax directly on goods of everyday use, such as, paint, glass, paper, playing cards, and tea. EFFECT Colonists protested and boycotted all British goods, causing the mercantilism to fail for Great Britain.

Boston Massacre CAUSE British soldiers were competing with colonists for jobs during their ‘off time’. EFFECT A fight breaks out between British soldiers and angry colonists, ending in the death of five colonists.

Boston Tea Party CAUSE Tea Act of 1773 declared, forcing colonists to buy British tea with a tax. EFFECT Sixty angry merchants, dressed as Native Americans, boarded three British ships and threw their loads of tea overboard into the Boston Harbor.

Intolerable Acts CAUSE
Martial Law declared in response to Boston Tea Party. Closed Boston Harbor until colonists paid for destroyed tea. EFFECT Prompted calling of the First Continental Congress.

First Continental Congress
CAUSE Parliament’s passing of the Intolerable Acts. EFFECT Organized boycotts of British goods.

Lexington and Concord CAUSE
British troops learn of the colonists’ supply of weaponry in Concord and go to retrieve it. EFFECT Colony militiamen meet the British troops in Lexington and open fire on them.

Second Continental Congress
CAUSE The first shots fired at Lexington, MA. EFFECT Managed colonial war efforts and slowly moved to independence.

Declaration of Independence
CAUSE Great Britain ‘bullying’ the thirteen colonies. Fighting between militiamen and British troops. EFFECT The Revolutionary War begins.
