Security and Shelter Security and shelter is the physical and psychological security of the classroom. Cozy reading areas allow students an area to retreat to and feel safe.

Social Contact Social contact is the physical arrangement of the room such as the desks in a horseshoe, cluster or interloop arrangement. Small horseshoes allow students to do individual work as well as have some interaction Desk clusters allow students to do group work.

Symbolic Identification Symbolic identification can be visual cues, examples of backgrounds, interests, accomplishments and preferences of students in the classroom. Displaying students artwork, is a great way to show the different ways each student can be creative. Displaying students pictures and birthdays allows students to see the diversity in the classroom as well as something they have in common!

Task Instrumentality Task instrumentality is the way the environment helps us carry out tasks that need to be accomplished. Having designated paths, and a clutter free classroom allows students to get from their desks to the rug safely and efficiently.

Growth Growth means that the classroom setting promotes children’s cognitive development and academic achievement in ways such as discovering, exploring, reading, building, and creating. Having stations that students can explore, or creative write in gives them the freedom to be independent and creative.

Pleasure Pleasure is what makes the classroom visually pleasing. Having scrapbook paper covered bulletin boards and color coordinating classrooms will make the room seem more at home and inviting to students.
