Aim: What was the point of the Indian Removal Act (1830) and how did it affect various groups of Americans and Indians? Do Now: Think: How might you react if Canada’s government forced you to move out of your home to an undisclosed location far away because they wanted the land your house was on?

America Continues to Expand… 1830 America getting crowded. People looked West for opportunity/space. land inhabited by Indian groups: Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Seminole coveted by Americans. Cherokee forced west, even though they had largely assimilated into American culture. Sequoyah, Cherokee.

1830 Congress (Legislative Branch) passed Indian Removal Act. Allowed US gov’t. to pay Indians to move. 1834: Congress created “Indian Territory” in Oklahoma.

Worcester vs. Georgia 1832 Gold discovered on Cherokee/Georgia land. Georgia tried to force Cherokee to move. Cherokee nation refused to move from Georgia. Cherokees took case to US Supreme Court: Worcester vs. Georgia. Chief Justice Marshall ruled Georgia could not force Cherokees off land. (Victory for Cherokee). President Jackson disregarded court’s ruling/supported Georgia. He said, “Marshall has made his decision. Now let him enforce it.”

The Trail of Tears 1835 some Cherokee moved, but 17,000 would not relocate. 1838, Gen. Winfield Scott and 7,000 troops forcibly removed the Cherokee from Georgia. Some WALKED over 800 miles. Thousands died along the trail. Today the Trail of Tears is considered an example of genocide.

First Hand Accounts of the Trail of Tears “When soldier came to our house, my father wanted to fight, but my mother told him that the soldiers would kill him if he did, and we surrendered without a fight. They drove us out of our house to join other prisoners in a stockade…The people got so tired of salt pork on the journey that my father would walk through the woods as we traveled [in the wagon], hunting for turkeys and deer, which he brought into camp to feed us…There was much sickness among the emigrants and a great many little children died of whooping cough.” “We are aware that some persons suppose it will be for our advantage to move beyond the Mississippi….Our people universally think otherwise…We wish to remain on the land of our fathers.” “Even [the] aged…nearly ready to drop in the grave, were traveling with heavy burdens attached to their backs, sometimes on frozen ground and sometimes on muddy streets, with no covering for their feet.” The Trail of Tears, painted by Robert Lindneux in 1942.
