Apostle’s Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell, The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; The Holy Catholic Church; The communion of saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen

Today’s Psalm Reading by Hyo Hyun Ryu Psalms 95 1 Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. 2 Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. 3 For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods. 4 In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. 5 The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. 6 Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker; 7 for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, as you did that day at Massah in the desert, 9 where your fathers tested and tried me, though they had seen what I did. 10 For forty years I was angry with that generation; I said, "They are a people whose hearts go astray, and they have not known my ways." 11 So I declared on oath in my anger, "They shall never enter my rest."

Today’s Psalm Reading by Hyo Hyun Ryu Psalms 110 1 The LORD says to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet." 2 The LORD will extend your mighty scepter from Zion; you will rule in the midst of your enemies. 3 Your troops will be willing on your day of battle. Arrayed in holy majesty, from the womb of the dawn you will receive the dew of your youth. 4 The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind: "You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek." 5 The Lord is at your right hand; he will crush kings on the day of his wrath. 6 He will judge the nations, heaping up the dead and crushing the rulers of the whole earth. 7 He will drink from a brook beside the way; therefore he will lift up his head.

Matthew Chapter 22 1 Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: 2 "The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. 3 He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come. 4 "Then he sent some more servants and said, 'Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.' 5 "But they paid no attention and went off-one to his field, another to his business. 6 The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them. 7 The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city.
11
Matthew Chapter 22 8 "Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come. 9 Go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.' 10 So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, both good and bad, and the wedding hall was filled with guests. 11 "But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. 12 'Friend,' he asked, 'how did you get in here without wedding clothes?' The man was speechless. 13 "Then the king told the attendants, 'Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.‘
12
Matthew Chapter 22 14 "For many are invited, but few are chosen." 15 Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. 16 They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. "Teacher," they said, "we know you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren't swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are. 17 Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?" 18 But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, "You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? 19 Show me the coin used for paying the tax." They brought him a denarius,
13
Matthew Chapter 22 20 and he asked them, "Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?" 21 "Caesar's," they replied. Then he said to them, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's." 22 When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away. 23 That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. 24 "Teacher," they said, "Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and have children for him. 25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother.
14
Matthew Chapter 22 26 The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh. 27 Finally, the woman died. 28 Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?" 29 Jesus replied, "You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. 30 At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. 31 But about the resurrection of the dead-have you not read what God said to you, 32 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead but of the living." 33 When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.
15
Matthew Chapter 22 34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" 37 Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." 41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 "What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?" "The son of David," they replied.
16
Matthew Chapter 22 43 He said to them, "How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him 'Lord'? For he says, 44 " 'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet." ' 45 If then David calls him 'Lord,' how can he be his son?" 46 No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.
17
Whose Son is Christ? Matthew 22: 41 - 46 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” (22:41-42a)

Timeline of Passover Week Monday – Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey colt to a Messiah’s welcome Tuesday – Jesus cleansed temple of sacrifice merchants and money changers Wednesday – He entered the city again and on the way He cursed the fig tree – The Judgment Parables While teaching in the temple courts, the religious leaders questioned the source of his authority Jesus condemns the Jewish leaders through the parable of the tenants Jesus condemns the multitudes through the parable of the wedding banquet Wednesday – Responses to Three Questions Jesus answers the question regarding payment of taxes to Caesar Jesus answers the question regarding the resurrection Jesus answers the question regarding the greatest commandment –Jesus questions the Pharisees – Whose son is Christ?
19
The Most Important Question in the World!!! “Who is Jesus Christ?” – Is He simply a man, the son of David? – Is He the divine Son of God? This question defines the battle lines of biblical Christianity – The one doctrine apart from which all others are meaningless – If He is not divine He could not be the Savior of the world, and men would have no way of becoming reconciled to God
20
Who is Jesus Christ? Many people who do not trust in Jesus as their Lord and Savior still rank Him as the highest model of humanity – Jean-Jaques Rousseau – French philosopher – “When Plato describes his imaginary righteous man... he describes exactly the character of Jesus Christ.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson – poet – held Jesus to be the most perfect of all men who have appeared on earth – John Stuart Mill – English philosopher and economist – “the pattern of perfection for humanity” Beneath these compliments is the denial that He was anything more than a man Who is Jesus Christ??
21
The Incisive Question (vv. 41-42a) The Pharisees were gathered together wondering what to do next after unsuccessfully entrapping him with their questions Jesus asked them a question about the Christ – Did not ask directly about Himself – Wanted the Pharisees to focus on what they already believed about the Christ – “Whose son is he?” i.e. from what Jewish line was He to be descended? While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he? (23:41-42a)
22
The Inadequate Answer (42b) The Pharisees were convinced the Messiah was no more than a man, the son of David – Scribes taught that “the Christ is the son of David” (Mark 12:35) – Various Old Testament scripture supported that 2 Samuel 7:12-13 and 15-16 Psalm 89 Amos 9:11 The answer that the Christ would be the Son of David was partial and inadequate – Jewish leaders thought the title Son of David was too great for Jesus – But, in reality it was much too limited “The son of David,” they replied. (23:42b)
23
The Infinite Reality (vv. 43-45) Greek word for Lord is kurios Hebrew word for Lord is Adonay Because God’s covenant name, Yahweh or Jehovah, was considered too holy to be spoken the Jews always substituted the word Adonay David was speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit – Greek phrase “speaking by the Spirit” is identical to that used by John of his vision on Patmos He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.”’ If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” (23:43-45)
24
The Infinite Reality (vv. 43-45) First Lord mentioned in this verse is God (Yahweh); second Lord mentioned is the Messiah (Adonay) The Lord (Yahweh) said to David’s Lord (Adonay), “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet.” David addressed the Messiah as his Lord Jesus’ question to the Pharisees – If David then calls Him “Lord,” how is He his son? – David would not have called a mere human descendant as “Lord” Jesus’ point – The title “son of David” alone is not sufficient for the Messiah; that He is also the Son of God
25
The Inappropriate Response (v. 46) The Pharisees and other religious leaders were: – Dumbfounded but not convinced, – Silenced but not convicted, – Humiliated but not humbled, – Reluctantly impressed by not believing Self-righteous religion will always be the greatest enemy of the gospel – Secularism generally is indifferent – Human religion is invariably hostile No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions. (22:46)
26
Last Week’s Verse “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?” Jesus replied, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it. ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (22:36-40)
27
This Week’s Verse If then David calls him 'Lord,' how can he be his son?“ No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions. (22:45-46)
28
Today’s phrase All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. ________________ hang on ______________. No one dared to ask him any more questions. No one ___________ to ask him any more questions.

This Week’s Conversation
30
Next Week’s Conversation A: Who is the Messiah? Whose son is he? B: Well. Everyone knows that a son of David would become the Messiah? It is all over the Scripture. A: Who do you think the Messiah is? Whose son is He? B: Well. Jesus marvelously clarifies this in Matthew 22:45 that the Messiah is not only the son of David, but also the Son of God. A: Then, whose son is Jesus Christ? B: He is the Son of David and also the Son of God. A: Hallelujah! You got that right on!
31
Today’s pop quiz Even though Jesus clearly identified himself as the Messianic Deity, the Pharisees and religious leaders responded inappropriately. Which one of the following was not their response? They were convinced, but too shy to praise him. They were dumbfounded but not convinced, They were silenced but not convicted, They were humiliated but not humbled, They were reluctantly impressed by not believing
