6. NS.8 APPLY AND EXTEND PREVIOUS UNDERSTANDINGS OF NUMBERS TO THE SYSTEM OF RATIONAL NUMBERS.

6.NS.8 Solve real-world and mathematical problems by graphing points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane. Include use of coordinate and absolute value to find distances between points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate.

DISTANCE Find the distance between (-3, 4) and (9, 4) Will this create a vertical or horizontal line? Which quadrants will the points lie in?

ABSOLUTE VALUE Given the points (4,5) and (4,-2),. How can you use absolute value to show the distance between the two points?

WEATHER ALERT Lighting has struck in multiple areas. When lightning strikes it affects the area that is one unit away from the point. Were any buildings affected by the lightning strike? Buildings Library(-2,-3) School(4,4) Police Station (3,-2) Park District (-5, 1) Lightning Strikes Strike 1(2, -2) Strike 2(-1,-2) Strike 3(4,6)

PLOT THE POINTS AND FIND THE DISTANCE I Plotted the points A and B on the graph A (2, 6) B (-1, 6) I think the distance between these two points is 6. Is this correct? Explain your thinking

Mr.Miller is shooting a slingshot at a target. He records his shots on a grid, where one unit represents one inch. His first shot strikes the target at (-1,-1). His second shot strikes at (-1,-4). What is the distance between his first and second shots?

Name points on the coordinate grid that is 5 units from the point (0, 0) with integer values. Can you name more than one point?

The coordinates of point A are (−6, 4). The coordinates of point B are (3, 4). Which expression represents the distance, in units, between points A and B ? A. |−6| + |3| B. |3| − |−6| C. |−6| + |−4| D. |4| − |−6|
