2 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA SYNOPSIS Propelled by the introduction of the 28 SADC Gender Protocols (Article 14 and 17) Promote gender equality in the farming sector. Training sessions, awareness campaigns, and meetings Men dominated leadership positions in pig farming Change by Khulave from 2012 Membership: 61% women and 39% men + Youth members (26%) In leadership: 70% women : 30% men Food insecurity, unemployment and economic empowerment 2

4 Help member farmers finance their projects i.e. help farmers to access loans. Improve pig breeds and better livelihood strategies. 5 BACKGROUND 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA Gap between the rich and poor was widening. Need to put farmers together so that they address similar and general concerns. Women highly affected by challenges in pork industry Farming policies, poor pork grading and pricing, high feed and medication costs and provision of start-up capital. Farming policy making to address these challenges The response is positive so far. Gender equality by 2015, yes we must! 5

18 CHALLENGES Insufficient funds to run all activities all over the Manzini region. Insufficient promotional material like pamphlets, cooperative profile articles, t-shirts, banners Khulave members must volunteer their time and cars so as to empower more women and men in communities. Majority of rural men have not yet understood the term “women empowerment” hence they are reluctant to be part of the regional cooperative. 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA 18

28 LEARNING AND SHARING WITH OTHER COUNCILS Importance of valuing one’s ideas and opinions without gender discrimination Group dynamics: working in harmony and having exposure to other organisations.
