Information Session I: Tuesday, April 15th at 12 p.m. Academic West 108 Information Session II: Thursday, April 17th at 5 p.m. ELC Center Room (256)

What is Mock Trial? ❖ A team-based competition that combines law, debate, and acting. So, whether interested in Law School or just improving your public speaking and debate skills, come out! ❖ Mock Trial Team reenacts the argument of either a criminal or civil case at the trial level. Team members build a case as both attorneys and witnesses, using critical thinking and debate skills. ❖ Compete against other schools around the country in full “mock” trials. Competition for the year revolves around a single civil or criminal case from the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA).

❖ Season starts in August when AMTA (American Mock Trial Association) releases the case that you use for entire year ❖ When ready to compete and practice, schools divide members into teams of 6-10 people ❖ Each team must be prepared to both defend and prosecute the case ➢ For each side of a case, each team provides 3 attorneys and 3 witnesses and go trial! ❖ The trial is subject to constraints that make it both challenging and fun! ➢ Must follow rules given by AMTA. ➢ All rules are based on real-life federal trial regulations. ➢ Witnesses must stay on script: their story or evidence must be consistent with what is written in their affidavit in the case materials provided by the AMTA. ❖ In a mock trial round… ➢ Each attorney conducts the direct examination of one witness, and the cross of an opposing witness. ➢ Two of the three attorneys also give speeches: one gives the five-minute opening statement, one gives the nine- minute closing argument. How Does Mock Trial Work?

❖ During One Round Competitions: ➢ Each round is scored by two judges independently ➢ For each component of the trial up to 10 points are given: ■Attorney: Opening and Closing Speeches, Direct and Cross ■Witness: Direct Performance, Cross Performance ❖ During Tournaments: ➢ Each tournament has four rounds ■Compete as the prosecution/plaintiff twice and as the defense twice ➢ Two judges per round meaning a maximum of eight "ballots" (judges' score sheets) to win ➢ The team that wins the most ballots, wins the tournament How Do We Win?

❖ Attorney: ➢ Advance the case through opening and closing statements ➢ Question witnesses ■ Both direct examination and cross-examination ➢ Memorize the rules of evidence to use against the opposing team ❖ Witness: ➢ Maintain their story and empower their case during cross-examination ➢ This is where acting is important (ex. a grieving mother) ➢ Your emotion/acting can win over the judges to give us victory What Role Can I Play?

❖ Our team is brand new and ready to compete with other schools such as Penn State, UPenn, Elizabethtown and others! ❖ Fall schedule consists of scrimmages (2) ❖ Official AMTA competitions begin in the Spring! ❖ We will be holding meetings weekly throughout the year (TBD) ➢ 1-2 hours on non-competition week ➢ 3-6 on competition weeks About Our Team

❖ Win! ❖ Travel across the country ❖ Improve your public speaking ❖ Express your creative side ❖ Get exposure to real life law experiences ❖ Prepare yourself for the real-world after Bucknell ❖ Meet amazing people What Do YOU Get From Joining?

❖ Tryouts will be held during the first few weeks of the Fall 2014 Semester ➢ During the tryout you must: ■Memorize a witness statement and be able to respond to questions while remaining confident and true to your affidavit ■Be ready for both a cross and direct examination ➢ What we’re looking for during tryouts are competitors who are: ■Confident in their public speaking ability ■Willing to put themselves into potentially uncomfortable situations and find a way out of it ■Ready to work hard and work as a part of a team We want you to be a part of the beginning of Bucknell’s Mock Trial Team!
