Integumentary System A system that is made up of parts that cover and protect the body Skin Hair Nails

Skin Epidermis The thin, outtermost layer of the skin Contains no blood vessels Dermis: The layer beneath the epidermis. A thick layer Contains hair follicles, sweat glands, oil glands and nerves Helps protect other body parts from injury and infection. Helps maintain body temp.

Skin If you become too hot, sweat glands produce perspiration that cools you.sweat glands Produces melanin: a pigment that provides skin color and protects from UV rays Oil glands: keep hair from getting dry and brittle and skin from drying out.

Caring for the Integumentary System Clean skin and Scalp Treat dandruff Select foods containing Vitamin A Check moles and freckles regularly Wear Sunscreen of at least SPF 15 Read directions when using makeup Seek proper care for skin rashes
