3. Check-In Everyone should have: ● A research topic ● Several research questions ● At least 5 credible sources ● Several claims on your completed Research Frame ● You will need a strong outline and clear/effective claim to direct writing

4. This week, we will... ● Write all the pieces of our research papers ● Revise: Read each other’s work and offer advice ● Rewrite: Write and rewrite to perfect our papers ● Research: Return to find more research when necessary

5. What is an Introduction? ● Introduces your paper ● Interesting to get the readers’ attention ● Give context for what will be covered in the paper ● Preview what will follow ● Include the central claim of the research paper

6. Now... ● Go to Classroom ● Open today’s “Writing an Introduction” file ● Read the Exemplary Introduction quietly to yourself

7. In groups, answer the following: 1.Is this a good introduction? What did you like/dislike about it? 2.What method did the author of the introduction use to get the readers’ attention? Was it effective? 3.What is the central claim of this research paper?

11. Peer Editing ● You will be reading 1 other person’s introduction ● You will then provide them with feedback on their introduction ● Everyone will be able to edit/revise their introduction based on peer feedback

12. While Reading the Intro ● Look for things that are both good and bad ● Use the “suggesting” function to suggest changes/make comments ● Look at both content (does what they’re saying make sense?) and conventions (are they using English correctly?)

15. Grading Your Portfolios ● Your Portfolios will be graded based on two categories: o Completion o Quality ● If you have everything completed, it’s a free 30 points ● Then, you will be graded out of 70 points based on how well everything is done

Subordinate Clause vs. Main Clause ● Main Clause: o Complete sentence, has a subject and predicate  The subject = person or thing doing the action  Predicate = the action they are performing o Main clause: I am going to play. o Incomplete clause: Plays basketball. ● Subordinate Clause: o Starts with conjunction, relies on the main clause, incomplete sentence o Subordinate clause: Whenever it rains. o Subordinate clause: Because it’s fun.
