Helms-Burton Act Korey Hayes Hakkan Gashi

What is it? The Helms-Burton Act was a trade embargo on Cuba. It extended on the already-in-place embargo the US had. It made it so that the embargo penalized foreign companies trading with Cuba.

When did it occur? The law was passed on March 12, 1996 by the 104 th United States Congress. It was immediately put into effect. Original Embargo has been in place since Eisenhower in 1961.

Did it work? Was designed to be put in place to cripple Castro’s Regime. Castro ended up gaining from the embargo, blaming Cuba’s poor economic state on the embargo itself.
