5  So….. British Isles = U.K. and Republic of Ireland U.K. = Great Britain and Northern Ireland Great Britain = England, Wales, Scotland England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are countries (also sometimes called autonomous regions), and they make up the larger “mega” country of the U.K.

7 BRITISH EMPIRE  Why do you think the British were able to have so many colonies around the world?  1800’s: more than ¼ of the world’s land was ruled by the British Empire  Most colonies are now independent, but some belong to the Commonwealth of Nations (discuss economics, business, science, etc.)

12 GOVERNMENT  Ireland = Republic A republic is a form of government in which the people, or some significant portion of them, have supreme control over the government and where offices of state are elected or chosen by elected people.  U.K. = Constitutional Monarchy Who is their monarch? Who’s next in line? Who’s after that? Who is the Prime Minister?
