2
Communication: Is a process by which messages are exchanged between people through a common system of signs, symbols, and behaviors. The message could be information, thoughts, or feelings. 18/09/14372Communication Skills, Adel Ali
3
Communication in nursing: The means of understanding and caring for the patient. An integral element of the nurse-patient interaction and the nursing process. The vehicle for establishing a therapeutic relationship, since it involves conveying information, exchange feelings and thoughts. The means by which people influence the behavior of another. (the successful outcome of nursing intervention) The relationship itself. Since without it, therapeutic nurse- patient relationship is impossible. 18/09/14373Communication Skills, Adel Ali

Components of communication process: Stimulus: ◦ The idea or event that acts as an incentive to formulate a communication message. Sender: ◦ It is the originator of the idea or message (source). The person who has something to communicate (a message). ◦ It is the place or the person from where the message is communicated or sent. ◦ The source initiates the message by encoding it into symbols (words) and signs (facial expressions, tone of voice, etc). ◦ The sender may be an individual or a group. 18/09/14374Communication Skills, Adel Ali
5
Components of communication process: Encoding: The mental transformation of message into symbols that convey the putting thoughts, feelings, or concepts into wards, symbols, ….that the other person can understand. The sender will encode his message with sounds, written wards, behavior and body language that he senses will help him to best communicate this message according to his intent. 18/09/14375Communication Skills, Adel Ali
6
Components of communication process: Encoding: ◦ To encode message effectively, the following points must be taken into consideration: 1.A ward can mean different things to different people. 2.Non-verbal behavior can alter the verbal message. 3.The message can be expressed in more than one way, for clarification. 4.The background and language capabilities of the receiver must be considered when encoding the message. 18/09/14376Communication Skills, Adel Ali
7
Components of communication process: Message: ◦ What is needed to be communicated. The message is the actual physical product from which the source encodes. ◦ When we speak, the speech is the message. When we write, the writing is the message. When we gesture, the movement of our arms and the expression of our face are the message. 18/09/14377Communication Skills, Adel Ali
8
Components of communication process: Channel (transmission): ◦ The vehicle that carries the message (the medium through which the message travels). ◦ It could be verbal, non-verbal or combination of both. ◦ Example of channels include: e-mail, face to face or phone conversation, letter, presentation. 18/09/14378Communication Skills, Adel Ali
9
Components of communication process: Receiver: ◦ The person who will receive the message. The receiver will then decode the message using conventions, cultural or contextual background, and language skills. ◦ The receiver has the responsibility to receive the message with the same meaning and spirit as intended by the sender. ◦ The receiver receives the message in the form of written symbols or gestures and then translates it into a form that can be understood. ◦ Any neglect on the part of receiver may make the communication ineffective. 18/09/14379Communication Skills, Adel Ali
10
Components of communication process: Decoding: ◦ Translation of the message into information (the interpretation of message) ◦ The reverse of encoding is decoding. ◦ The receiver decodes the message by changing the symbols, signs into meaning. ◦ The more the message is written clearly by encoder, the more it get positive response from the decoder. ◦ If the receiver does not decode the message correctly and misunderstands it, the communication will become ineffective. ◦ A decoder may be a listener or reader. 18/09/143710Communication Skills, Adel Ali
11
Components of communication process: Feedback: ◦ Verbal or non-verbal response of the receiver. ◦ The feedback is actually the reaction or response of the receiver. ◦ It may be positive or negative. ◦ Feedback can be written, oral or silence. It is an action or reaction on the part of receiver. 18/09/143711Communication Skills, Adel Ali
12
Components of communication process: Context: ◦ The situation in which the message is delivered. ◦ This may include the surrounding environment or broader culture (i.e. corporate culture, international cultures, etc.). 18/09/143712Communication Skills, Adel Ali
