Caroline Gilson & Brooke Cox Marketing Branch Libraries to Students Through Web Videos A Walk Through Prevo This video is a general introduction to the resources and spaces in the Prevo Science Library. Branching Out Mimicking the style of the Common Craft “In Plain English” videos we created a whimsical description of the three branch libraries on campus. Google Images vs VRC This is the first video in our four part series inspired by the Mac vs. PC commercials and talks about the benefits of using the Visual Resource Center on campus. Music Library Move in a Minute This is a speedy documentation of the move of the Music Library during the music building renovation this summer. Designed to reach students in their Web 2.0 environment, the commercials are posted on YouTube, the library website, individual librarian’s Facebook profile and are played on the campus cable station and during library instruction sessions. This poster focuses on the conception and production process, the outcomes of our project, and the challenges and lessons learned. Why Video? As branch librarians we frequently look for ways to increase student and faculty awareness of our existence and resources. As we learned more about various Web 2.0 tools we knew that we wanted our videos to: Grab attention Play off recognizable concepts and other commercials Be short and sweet Use students as actors Include humor Be available in multiple venues Be an effective form of marketing Instructional Technology Collaboration DePauw University actively encourages the integration of technology into the liberal arts curriculum. FITS (Faculty Instructional Technology Support) offers consultations, dedicated workspace, and workshops that support faculty in their technology based projects. When we developed the library video project, we quickly recognized the value of collaborating with FITS. With the support of Director of Libraries, Rick Provine, we submitted a proposal to work on library promotional videos during the Annual FITS Summer Workshop. Our project was assigned a dedicated instructional technologist who guided us through the process from planning to completion. With this pre-workshop assistance we prepared our storyboards, identified necessary technology and completed the initial filming. The workshop itself offered a week of structured project work time as well as mini-lectures and discussion sessions on a variety of technology topics. We received hands-on training in video editing and basic audio editing and were able to complete two of our branch commercials. With the skills we learned during the workshop, we continued filming and editing and by the fall had finished all seven videos in the project. The FITS workshop is a successful model for instructional technology and faculty collaboration that allowed us to reach students more effectively. The videos were patterned after existing commercials (i.e. Mac vs. PC, the Common Craft videos, MasterCard), and this helped determine how to film. Different commercials required different spaces and setups for filming. We consulted with DePauw’s ITAP Digital Video Instructor for technical assistance in setting up optimal lighting and sound. Each commercial took less than a day to film and resulted in an average of one to two hours of raw footage. Spring 2007 Designed the project and goals Wrote a proposal for FITS workshop Developed our storyboards and scripts Pre-workshop filming of Prevo, Branch and VRC shorts Summer 2007 Participated in FITS workshop Filmed remaining videos and completed editing Fall 2007 - Spring 2008 Drafted and distributed student library awareness survey Posted videos on YouTube, campus cable, library website Reviewed data from student survey Summer 2008 Developed concepts for additional videos and a radio spot Participated in FITS workshop 2007-2008 Project Timeline Equipment Post-Production Production Cameras (MiniDV): Panasonic PV-GS55, Sony DCR-HC26, Panasonic DVX-100B Tripod: Bogen Microphone: Shotgun microphone attached to a boom pole connected to the camera's audio through an XLR cable that ran into a XLR/2.5mm converter Hardware: Mac G5, combo deck, DVD-R, 200 GB external drive Software: Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, Finale, Pro Tools, Audacity Assessment In September 2007 and February 2008 a web survey was distributed to all DePauw students. In the fall we found that students could name some of the branch libraries, but not all. In the spring students named more of the branch libraries. While we cannot assert that this increase is due to the release of our promotional videos, we do know from anecdotal evidence that students do respond positively to our videos. We are are in the process of producing a new series of videos and a radio spot for release during the 2008-2009 academic year. We followed the same process this year starting with the FITS summer workshop to polish our video skills and learn how to capture and edit audio. Some lessons we learned along the way : Explore camera options at your institution Always shoot footage with the same camera (esp. if borrowing cameras from A/V services) Be aware of the default settings of the camera (cinema or full screen mode) Know what features your camera is running (auto turn-off or stabilization) Allow adequate time for recruiting student actors Determine your lighting, sound needs in advance From: depauwbranchlib Views: 651 01:24 More in Entertainment From: depauwbranchlib Views: 527 01:31 More in Entertainment From: depauwbranchlib Views: 6,507 00:51 More in Entertainment
