GRAPHS
2
VOCABULARY Graph- A tool that visually organizes data. Axis- The horizontal (x-axis) and vertical (y-axis) borders of a graph that are used to plot data points. Scale- The distance between points on the x and y axis.

TYPES OF GRAPHS Use student pages from the following resource: http://www2.edc.org/mathpartners/pdfs/6- 8%20Statistics%20and%20Probability.pdf Describe the type of data organized in the graph. Describe the appearance of the graph. Decide which graph would best organize five types of data. Brainstorm kinds of questions that could be organized with bar, scatter, line, and pie-chart graphs.

WARM-UP At the Museum of Science…. There is a lightning show every 20 minutes. There is a live animal show every 15 minutes. If the lightning show and live animal show both start at the same time at 9 A.M., when is the next time that they will start at the same time?
16
GOALS Describe 4 types of graphs: histograms, scatter-plots, pie charts, and line graphs. Match each chart to the type(s) of data that they are most appropriate for. Choose a chart when given a data set.
17
READ ABOUT TYPES OF GRAPHS A scatter plot is more useful for looking at two related characteristics within one sample, such as weight of a package and cost of postage for the package. A scatter plot is created by placing one of those characteristics on the x–axis and one on the y–axis, then plotting each data point where it lines up on both the x–axis and the y–axis. Scatter plots are useful for showing variation. A line plot also shows the relationship between an x and y variable in a sample where there is not variation. Line plots are often used to show a change in the y-variable that happens over time. A circle graph is useful for showing the percentage of responses that fall into each category and comparing the sizes of categories. It is created by drawing a circle, then dividing it into pie wedges that are sized in proportion to the percentage of responses from the category represented by each pie wedge. A histogram is useful for comparing the sizes of groups in a category. First categories (which can be numerical) are created on the x-axis. Number intervals are plotted on the y-axis. Bars are plotted to show the size of each group.
